I've only read Hibari no Asa which I believe is arguably a rare gem.
In any case, I can see her talent in how she has distinct realistic foundations to her characters from their insecurities and mindset of beliefs.

the kind of mangaka I feel the need to read more of because her stories can be so vastly different from each other

Could someone add to MAL her newest josei series called Ikoku Nikki? ^^

Wow. This woman writes exceptionally well written characters and poignant settings. Not to mention how she's one of those very rare mangaka who not only uses unique settings to introduce her characters to each other, but also creates female characters that are realistic and likeable. Kudos!

P.S. Much like everybody here commented already, it's astounding to see that she's the one behind the goofy Don't Cry Girl.

She's my favorite. I just love how she can tell so many types of stories, from BL to something so crazy and funny like "Don't Cry Girl" to something so sweet and perverse like "Mud". All of them are so realistic and touching, and she is just so good with her characters, 'cause they're so human that I feel like I just could find them living next door or while riding the train.

(Oh, and "Mud" is like a title - or subtitle, I'm not really sure - for "Satanic Sweet", if you guys are in doubt.)

"Mud" was what got me into researching more of her work and it's not even on the list ):
That aside, I really like her female characters.

Illumination was the first comic by her that I read and it had a big impression on me. Probably one of the best works to start with if one's interested in BL. But only that Yamashita is probably the most versatile mangaka out there. Love her works.

There's no "Mud" D:

It's amazing how she can go from the silliness and fun of titles like Don't Cry, Girl and Butter!! to the chilling commentary on rape culture in Hibari no Asa. I really want to see how that one plays out.
