Ice Age Chronicle of the Earth is a simply uninteresting manga, it brings that eternal "could have been better" feeling, you know?
The Eighties aesthetic and the appeal to detail
I think the technical quality of this manga is undeniable, it is very well illustrated, from the more "underground" scenarios, which bring a very claustrophobic feeling, with closed, dark and metallic environments, to the more open scenarios, such as the frozen mountains, the forests, among several other scenarios that are very well drawn by Jiro, and honestly, I expected no less from
...
a great mangaka like Jiro.
I think it's important to highlight mainly the feeling that Jiro's art brings with it, much due to its very characteristic 80's aesthetic, you know? With that more rounded design of the characters, the dirtier and more detailed scenes, it's no wonder that this manga, at least aesthetically, reminds me a lot of Akira, with that appeal to grandeur, you know? With big "Set Pieces", which seem a bit megalomaniacal to me, where everything is always very visually striking... Anyway, I think at the end of the day, Akira defined a lot of this 80s aesthetic in manga and anime, this aesthetic that makes me feel a lot of nostalgia, an aesthetic that is much, much more original and well-crafted than the ones we have nowadays, where every anime or manga has the same old boring look, but even though Ice Age Chronicle of the Earth drinks from this "Eighties" source, this doesn't make it a good manga.
An empty and meaningless narrative
The plot as a whole of this manga is something extremely disappointing, because the author makes us believe from the beginning that we will see the journey of a classic hero, and as the name says, he makes us follow a chronicle of a previously unknown era, the problem here is that none of this really happens, from the mystical elements to the construction of the characters, everything here is really below average, especially the characters.
Speaking a little more about Takeru, he's a terrible protagonist, not because of his personality or anything like that, just because he's poorly written. His whole motivation throughout the story is very shallow, you know? Right from the beginning, we see that he is the bastard son of a great man who is the president of a city, or something like that, and for some reason, Takeru was sent to a sort of mining cave, and that's where the events that start the story of this manga occur. The big problem here is how Takeru's evolution occurs, where he goes from a rebellious character, to a super selfless guy, and this happens overnight, it's very strange to follow this change, because it occurs out of nowhere, there is actually no event, or a chain of events that cause Takeru to really mature and become a man of respect, he simply changes his personality completely from one day to the next, without a minimum of justification, and this makes the character extremely weak within the narrative, because all his actions within the work, are empty actions, without motivations, he is simply following what was written by the author, but without any real motivation behind it, and this is extremely disappointing.
The other characters that make up this story are just as poorly written and disappointing as Takeru, so I won't even bother talking much about them here. In the end, I was left with that feeling of "This could have been done better," you know? Because even if the characters weren't good, you could still bet that the mythology of that world would make it all worthwhile, but unfortunately that wasn't the case. The lore of this world is just uninteresting, the whole story behind the "Giants", and all that mysticism surrounding them is never really explained, it just seems to be something thrown in for the story to have some mystical element up its sleeve, and also to give Takeru some motivation to continue his meaningless journey, but it just didn't work for me.
Climate change and the passage of time
But it's not all bad here, I believe that the subtext of this manga is the great "Gold" it has to offer, because there is a whole discussion here about climate change, and how this affects humanity in a negative way, from clear natural disasters, such as the current ice age humanity is experiencing, to fascist illusions to fix this world, all these topics I find very interesting to discuss, even more so in a manga that has a more "mass" appeal, within the limitations of a science fiction manga of course.
I find very interesting all the discussion about the passage of time that exists in this manga, where things are changing faster and faster, and how this affects us, making us lose the reference of the past, and thus forcing us to make the same mistakes of our ancestors, precisely because of this speed that things change, And this is very much reflected in the climate changes that exist in this fictional world, where human beings, most likely caused these drastic climate changes, causing humanity to live in this ice age, and yet they continue to make the same mistakes, mining the earth, polluting the environment, and doing everything that led to the downfall of humanity. ... And of course, in moments like these, moments of despair, is where that delicious and seductive feeling that fascism provokes is born.
It is at this moment that "la belle mere" is born, an artificial intelligence that has realized all the atrocities humans have done and do to nature, and to "purify" this world, decides to simply exterminate the human race, and put in its place a "purer" race, called "a.d.o.l. f" (yes, I know, it's a very silly reference), and this makes a clear connection to extremely fascist ideals, and while it's a good discussion to have within this manga, the author just makes it just a silly reference anyway, but it would be very interesting to see this element of the story be worked out better.
Ice Age Chronicle of the Earth is an empty manga, but with interesting themes.
At the end of the day, Ice Age Chronicle of the Earth is a rather empty work, it appeals a lot to this fiction for the aesthetics, where everything needs to be extremely detailed and grandiose, but forgets to work on the micro, build good characters, with palpable motivations, and so on ... And don't get me wrong, Ice Age Chronicle of the Earth is not a disposable manga, there are interesting discussions about climate change, the passage of time (a topic often addressed in Jiro's works), and it even gives a brushstroke on fascist ideologies, but unfortunately such themes are not very deep in this work, making it just a bit boring overall. But if you want to read a classic hero's journey, and also well illustrated, I think Ice Age Chronicle of the Earth might be a good manga for you, but for me, this work is very "Gray", and I think this is the best description I can give you.

As Crônicas da Era do Gelo é uma mangá que nem fede e nem cheira, nem fode e nem sai de cima... Ele traz aquela eterna sensação de “poderia ter sido melhor”, sabe?
A estética oitentista e o ode ao detalhismo
Acredito ser inegável a qualidade técnica dessa obra, ela é mulatíssima bem ilustrada, desde os cenários mais “undergrounds”, que trazem uma sensação bem claustrofóbica, com ambientes fechados, escuros e metálicos, até os cenários mais abertos, como as montanhas geladas, florestas, dentre diversos outros cenários que são muito bem desenhados pelo Jiro, e sinceramente, eu não esperava menos de um grande Mangaká como Jiro.
Acho importante destacar principalmente o sentimento que a arte do Jiro traz consigo, muito devido a sua estética muito característica dos anos 80, sabe? Com aquele design mais arredondado dos personagens, os cenários mais sujos e detalhados, não é à toa que esse mangá, ao menos esteticamente, me lembra muito Akira, com aquele senso de grandeza, sabe? Com grandes “Set Pieces”, que me parecem meio megalomaníacos, onde tudo sempre é muito visualmente impactante... Enfim, acho que no fim do dia, Akira definiu muito dessa estética oitentista nos mangás e anime, essa estética que me faz sentir muita nostalgia, estética essa que é muito, mas muito mais original e bem trabalhada do que as que temos hoje em dia, onde todo anime ou mangá tem o mesmo visual entediante de sempre, mas, apesar de As Crônicas da Era do Gelo beber dessa fonte “oitentista”, isso não o torna um bom mangá.
Uma narrativa vazia e sem sentido
O enredo como um todo desse mangá é algo extremamente decepcionante, pois o autor te faz acreditar, desde o início, que você verá uma clássica jornada do herói, e como o próprio nome diz, nos fazer acompanhar uma crônica de uma era até então desconhecida, o problema aqui é que nada disso realmente acontece, desde os elementos místicos até a construção dos personagens, tudo aqui é realmente muito abaixo da média, principalmente os personagens.
Falando um pouco mais sobre o Takeru, ele é um péssimo protagonista, não por conta de sua personalidade ou algo do tipo, somente por ser mal escrito mesmo. Toda sua motivação, ao longo da história é muito superficial, sabe? Logo de cara vemos que ele é um filho bastardo de um grande figurão que é o presidente de uma cidade, ou algo do tipo, e por algum motivo, Takeru foi mandado para uma espécie de caverna de mineração, e é lá onde ocorre os eventos que dão início a história desse mangá. O grande problema aqui é como ocorre a evolução do Takeru, onde ele passa de um personagem rebelde, para um cara super altruísta, e isso acontece de uma hora para outra, é muito estranho acompanhar essa mudança, pois isso ocorre do nada, não existe de fato um evento, ou uma cadeia de eventos que façam Takeru realmente amadurecer e passar a ser um homem de respeito, ele simplesmente muda completamente sua personalidade de um dia para o outro, sem um mínimo de justificativa, e isso torna o personagem extremamente fraco dentro da narrativa, pois todas as suas ações dentro da obra, são ações vazias, sem motivações, ele simplesmente está seguindo aquilo que foi escrito pelo autor, mas sem nenhuma real motivação por trás, e isso é extremamente decepcionante.
Os demais personagens que compõe essa história são tão mal escritos e decepcionantes quanto Takeru, então nem me darei muito ao trabalho de falar muito sobre eles aqui. No final, ficou aquela sensação de “Isso daqui poderia ter sido mais bem trabalhado”, sabe? Pois mesmo que os personagens não fossem bons, ainda daria para apostar que a mitologia daquele mundo iria fazer tudo valer a pena, mas infelizmente esse não foi o caso. A lore desse mundo é só desinteressante, toda a história por traz dos “Gigantes”, e todo aquele misticismo que envolve eles nunca são explicados realmente, parece ser só algo meio que jogado na história para ter algum elemento místico no mangá, e também para dar alguma motivação para o Takeru continuar aquela jornada sem sentido dele, mas isso simplesmente não funcionou para mim.
As mudanças climáticas e a passagem do tempo
Mas nem tudo é ruim aqui, acredito que o subtexto dessa obra é o grande “Ouro” que ela tem a oferecer, pois existe aqui toda uma discussão sobre as mudanças climáticas, e como isso afeta de maneira positiva e negativa a humanidade, desde os claros desastres naturais, como a atual era do gelo que a humanidade vive, até os delírios fascistas para consertar esse mundo, todos esses temas eu acho muito interessante de serem discutidos, ainda mais em um mangá que tem um apelo mais de “massa”, dentro das limitações de um mangá sci-fi, é claro.
Eu acho muito interessante toda a discussão da passagem do tempo que existe nesse mangá, onde as coisas estão mudando cada vez mais rápido, e como isso nos afeta, nos fazendo perder a referência do passado, e assim nos forçando a cometer os mesmos erros dos nossos antepassados, justamente por conta dessa velocidade que as coisas mudam, e isso é refletido muito nas mudanças climáticas que existe nesse mundo fictício, onde o ser humano, muito provavelmente causou aquelas drásticas mudanças climáticas, fazendo com que a humanidade vivesse naquela era do gelo, e mesmo assim, eles continuam a cometer os mesmos erros, minerando a terra, poluindo o meio ambiente, e fazendo tudo aquilo que gerou a derrocada da humanidade... E é claro, em momentos como esses, momentos de desespero, é onde nasce aquele sentimento gostoso e sedutor que o fascismo causa.
É nesse momento que nasce a “la belle mere”, uma inteligência artificial que percebeu todas as atrocidades que os seres humanos fizeram e fazem a natureza, e para “purificar” esse mundo, ela decide simplesmente exterminar a raça humana, e colocar uma raça mais “pura” no lugar deles, chamada “a.d.o.l.f” (sim, eu sei, é uma referência muito idiota), e isso faz uma ligação clara a ideais extremamente fascistas, e apesar de ser uma boa discussão a se ter dentro desse mangá, o autor se limita a tornar isso apenas uma referência idiota mesmo, mas seria muito interessante ver esse elemento na história ser melhor trabalhado.
As Crônicas da Era do Gelo não fode e nem sai de cima
No final do dia, As Crônicas da Era do Gelo é uma obra um tanto quanto vazia, ele apela muito a essa ficção pela estética, onde tudo precisa ser extremamente detalhado e grandioso, mas esquece de trabalhar o micro, construir bons personagens, com motivações palpáveis, e por aí vai... E não me entenda mal, As Crônicas da Era do Gelo não é um mangá descartável, existe ali discussões interessantes sobre as mudanças climáticas, a passagem do tempo (tema esse muito abordado nas obras do Jiro), e até mesmo dá uma pincelada ali em ideologias fascistas, mas infelizmente tais temas não são muito aprofundados nesse obra, a tornando apenas meio entediante no geral. Mas se você quer ler uma clássica jornada do herói, e também bem ilustrada, acho que As Crônicas da Era do Gelo pode ser um bom mangá para você, mas para mim, essa obra é muito “Cinza”, e acho que essa é melhor descrição que posso dar a ela.
