This is a review of an ongoing manga, it reflects my opinions up to chapter 11 but it can change later on if, you know, they fuck it up.

It has been a very long time since a harem story had me interested in it's outcome, and being able to generate that feeling should be more than enough to give it the highest marks in its genre. That wonder doesn't come from wanting to know which girl will win, although it isn't too obvious yet, but from how many possible bad ends this story could have. Possibly multiple in a row.

I felt compelled to writte this up seeing a lot of other reviewers missing the point of what makes this series enjoyable.

On the most surface layer this is your standard romcom. Childhood friends comes back and protagonist is torn between her and his crush. Some past feelings are alluded, etc, etc.

The story arc is really basic and straigthforward. What makes this interesting is the characters themselves. They are all fundamentally flawed in really worrying ways.

Basically everyone is a psycho and the layers are slowly peeled as the story moves forward. Mind you this still a shounen series so no one is getting stabbed here or ...

Well, what can I say about this manga? I am not sure if they were even trying.

Story (1/10):
Watari-kun no xx ga Houkai Sunzen is a manga about a young boy and his little sister who have moved to their aunt's house after the death of their parents. They used to have a field, but a girl named "field destroyer" (or Satsuki Tachibana) ruined everything in the past. After the protagonist's little sister Suzu tells him that she wants to have a field again, just like in the past, the "field destroyer" returns simultaneously, but instead of doing anything to ruin their field, she instead proceeds ... to... kissing the protagonist? Alright, I already know where this is going. There's nothing else to be seen here.

Art (5/10):
I don't think the artwork in this manga is necessarily "bad", but it is that kind of art style with nothing new or unique to offer, nothing that could make it, in any way, memorable, it's just decent enough not to bother the reader.

Character (1/10):
Oh boy, where to begin? The worst part of the manga were, probably, the characters.
Naoto, the protagonist, is a regular high school student, except he doesn't even talk to his friends anymore because he is (pretty much all the time) thinking about his little sister and spending every single minute of his daily life taking care of her and spending time with her. Of course anyone would think he has some sort of "siscon", and of course he denies that. But let's be honest that we already know where all of this is going. Nothing memorable about this character, nor any personality trait that I would consider interesting.
Naoto's little sister Suzu is the kind of character that we're all used to (and sick of) seeing in manga and anime in general: A (VERY) generic and (VERY) useless loli who loves saying the word "onii-chan" (as much as she loves the onii-chan himself) and cannot do anything on her own. She is absolutely jealous of her big brother to the point that she would not allow him to even befriend other girls and would become completely upset if she saw a girl kissing him (which is what happened in the very beginning of the manga).
Satsuki Tachibana, the "field destroyer", is a character that was initially thought to be the antagonist of the manga for being the one responsible for ruining Naoto's field in the past. But it turns out that she is just a creepy stalker who is always chasing him, even when he is not aware of that, and probably has some serious issues for thinking that it would be smart to suddenly kiss him all of a sudden after making him hate her. In fact, even the kiss was a stupid move, since she kept kissing him for so long to the point where he fainted. For the rest of the story, all I can say is that she is a poorly written character, and nothing she says or does makes any sense.

Enjoyment (1/10):
I actually wanted to give this a 0, because I could not enjoy this manga for a single moment. The only reason I kept reading it was because I gave it so many chances to prove that it could be good or that it would get any better in the future. Well, nope, it's just as terrible as it seems.

Overall (2/10):
I think I have already written enough in the previous sections, so let me be quick in this one and say: Don't waste your time reading this. This one doesn't seem to be going anywhere, and will remain as a completely lame manga with poorly written (and even generic) characters, average artwork, ridiculous story that doesn't seem to make any sense even when they attempt to explain it and 0 enjoyment.

Note: The synopsis of the story is very misleading. That plot point is almost entirely dropped within the first 10 chapters to focus on more interesting things.

Watari-kun no xx ga Houkai Sunzen is a Romantic Drama for Seinen audiences that takes a strong look into the mind of emotionally and psychologically unstable teens in a "harem" story.

I put "harem" in quotations because the actual harem elements are too few and far between for me to confidently categorize it as such, and many of the potential harem characters are pushed aside for the main two girls, Ishihara and Satsuki. Note that I don't call it a ... comedy either, which is objectively not anywhere remotely what this series is. Not even a Dramedy. It has funny moments, but rarely are they laugh out loud funny moments and often times an awkward and unsettling "humor" meant to showcase the nature of each characters' psyche.

Almost nothing that happens in this manga is played for laughs. There's no overly comedic style for what would be punchlines, no emphasis or dwelling on anything that could be potentially considered a joke. Instead many of these moments are shown in very unsettling ways and awkward circumstances. They're meant to assist with making you feel uncomfortable, not relaxed. Sadly a lot of people I've spoken to about this series only read it as if they were getting what was advertised. This has lead to many criticizing it for lack of comedy, and the noticeable absence of harem elements.

People have also been criticizing the work for its deeply flawed characters. This is to be expected as, while fundamentally flawed characters make for good writing (especially psychologically flawed), they aren't very good for widespread appeal. Many people will find such things annoying, in fact most people find it annoying. It also doesn't help that many people are looking for a bloody fun time with a story. This story isn't what most would consider fun. As such, I don't believe this is for everyone. It's characters aren't very appealing to a general audience, and may genuinely put off others. It's not meant to be a comfortable read.

After dropping the facade it puts on for the first handful of chapters, the manga takes a very serious and dark turn, highlighting and focusing on the psyche and emotional stability of the characters. Right now its focused on Ishihara and Watari's relationship and how it's being difficult on them. I call this the Ishihara arc, and its been some of the most terrifying, chilling, tense character writing I've seen in years. Every chapter threatens that someone will break, and the art/scene direction emphasizes this 100 fold.

The Characters are all wonderfully flawed on a deep, psychological level and this lends itself to some genuinely tense character writing when put in relationships. This allows the reader to become intimate with their deepest insecurities and better read what a character is thinking based on expressions alone. The visual story telling at play here is excellent, and on top of the wonderfully drawn, expressive character art the emotional and mental struggles of each character come through perfectly. The only thing that'd make it better is if the paneling was more creative.

Overall I give the manga so far a 9/10. Things develop naturally and there's nothing that breaks the logic of this progression. I give the series props for actually putting the main character in a relationship so early in the story so it could tackle the themes it wants to as soon as possible. There is chemistry there between the main couple, but it will take a lot of work for it to work out. The likely route is the relationship will fall apart, or mistakes will be made that continue down the path of a psychological romantic drama.

Chapter 51 Update: The story has continued to be extremely compelling through its exploration of the character psychology. This has made Ishihara my favorite character so far as her extreme possessiveness and insecurity is something I had to deal with when I was in high school. This extra connection to me emotionally has me now awarding the manga a 10/10, and I hope the story continues to progress down this direction.

Watari-kun no xx ga Houkai Sunzen is not a ground-breaking manga, sure. It rehashes a lot of the common themes you'll find in any harem romantic comedy. However, it is not nearly as silly or reprehensible as many of its fellow stories in the same genre. I only cringed a handful of times while reading it. This discomfort is easily outweighed by appealing leads and attractive character art.

Admittedly, like any reader I have my own tastes and this may be a case of this manga just happening to land in my "strike zone." I really like the Ishihara (Yukari) character, ... both her appearance and personality. I also enjoy the fact that so far, the story hasn't taken the easy way out and completely run roughshod over the main character's genuine affection for her. A lot of harem romantic comedies like to make the MC into an indecisive prick who bounces around between the female leads. The MC is also a responsible young man who takes life very seriously and is very respectful towards both adults and women. He considers his precarious living situation carefully and is motivated by love and circumstance to think about his future. Just these traits alone place him WAY above the standard harem protagonist.

In both manga and anime, it seems customary to set up some kind of childhood trauma for the main characters and call that "character development" as bits and pieces of the past are revealed. Watari-kun doesn't stray from this formula, and indeed does a rather poor job of developing the backstory in a satisfying way. This is the main weakness of Watari-kun: the quality of the writing is only mediocre. Personally, since events unfolded more or less the way I wanted them to, I was willing to forgive the writer's obvious lack of writing skill and/or actual life experience.

The reviewer who didn't like NTR, I'm sorry, but in 48 chapters there isn't any. Yes, there was a conversation between some students where one asked the other about NTR, but the MC has yet to actually cheat on his one and only. I'm sorry if this is a spoiler but the NTR complaint just felt so unjust I had to address it. Seriously, there are so many misleading MAL reviews. The only reason why this manga is ostensibly harem is because more than one female character likes him and puts him in awkward situations. But this happens in real life; although it may seem being popular is a high-class problem to have, people do get jealous and do things they should not.

Another complaint I saw from more than one reviewer is that main character's little sister keeps calling him "oni chan" and this was part of the reason why they found her annoying. This is just a lack of their understanding of Eastern culture. I don't know how it is in other countries but in both China and Japan you refer to your older siblings by title, NEVER EVER by name. To do otherwise is blatantly disrespectful. Also, while these reviewers found her personality annoying, they don't understand how realistic her character's depiction is. Watari and his sister lost their parents. The main character was forced to take care of her BY HIMSELF as they were passed from relative to relative. Even their aunt, whom they currently live with, is an obvious shut-in who doesn't exactly provide a lot of love and affection. In this situation, it would be strange if the little sister (Watari, Suzushiro) were NOT attached to her older brother. There is nothing inappropriate in their relationship. Suzu does not make sexual advances on her brother, and her attachment is obviously the attachment of a child towards the only stable emotional anchor in her life. Come on, use your common sense. There is no hint of incest or sis-con in this story. Suzu doesn't talk about marrying his brother and even comes to support his relationships as she herself tries to relieve some of the obvious immense pressure on him.

And for the reviewer who found Suzu's presence in the story to be pointless, let me explain it for you: she is mainly there to show us that the main character thinks about the feelings of someone other than himself. When I think back on my experiences in school here in the US, I now believe that many Americans are selfish and spoiled with a very unbecoming sense of entitlement. Perhaps this leads to a lack of understanding and admiration for those who are willing to put the needs of their loved ones before their own.

Watari-kun is definitely worth a read, and I actually think it is quite a bit more romance than harem or even comedy--which is exactly how I like it. How much you like it may depend upon your personal tastes and maybe even your open-mindedness towards the customs of cultures other than your own.

On the outside, Watari kun seems to fall on the genre of a harem, romance, comedy whatever. After thorough reading however, it doesn't have any elements of that. Story: As far as the story goes it is nothing special. A generic pure minded looking guy. The story won't be so important but it's nice. Anyway few plotholes some events here and there and so on.

Art: The art is okay, characters look fine, there is a little attention to details, some enjoyable ecchi. And that's pretty much it.

(So, coincidentially enough, chapter 39 came out as i was planning to write this, so there's gonna be spoilers; a bit. Another thing, this is completely opinionated and you shouldn't take me seriously, though that should go without saying.)

''Watari- kun no xx ga houkai sunzen'' was one of the manga series that tipped that really thin scale between ''Do i like anime or manga more,'' making me a complete manga lover. I strong a segnificantly strong biased for this one, but i'll try not to let it blind my critique.

To be fair, i can easily understand why people don't like Houkai Sunzen, it can give ... an incrediblt bad first impression, depending on how you approach it. The way i did it was with the mindset of,''It's romance, even if it's cliche or ridicilous i'll love it,'' which obviously is not a good way to look at anything, but i've broadened my horizons since then.

The story is unsurprisingly simple. It's telling the story of Watari Nao, the guy who i can't decide if he's just that much of an innocent person or is just the biggest wuss in manga, or both! He has an incredibly strong connection with his sister, Suzu, and vice versa, with Suzu having an incredibly powerful borther complex. To Nao's dismay, the one person he relentlessly can't forgive forced herself back into his life after 6 whole years of peace, stalking him consitently. That person being, ''The Field Destroyer,'' Satsuki Tachibana, also known as the best girl of this manga, please @ me! We're told that she completely demolished their vegetable field 6 years back, causing Nao to...hate her. I'll be honest, yeah, that's dumb. I mean, a field is just...a field, grow up, dude. WIth her disturbing his peaceful life(including his not-so-peaceful crush on his classmate, Ishihara), Nao has to deal with the three women of his life at the same time, one of them not being in a romantic sense, and also ignoring a few other ones. Yeah, Nao's backstory is ridicilously dumb, and this is what i think, but a good cliched childhood is better than an idiotic original one, so i'll give the plot a 5/10, but i have to mention how each chapter feels like it takes hours to watch, mostly on the in-between chapters that take place between conflicts or dramatic scenes, but they're fine.

The art is not extraordinary; it's quite simple, cute sometimes, kinda charming and it works well enough when it has to. It's quite obvious Narumi Naru wasn't trying to draw the most beautiful thing ever, and he didn't; he drew a perfectly good-looking manga with great expressiveness and really nice locals and the character designs are quite, let's face it, sexy and attractive, especially my good ol' mate Glasses-kun! I'll throw it a 7/10.

Here we get into the ~~Characters~~. They're...ehh, good? Acceptable? Decent? I mean, i adore them, but i'm looking at this differently. For starters, Nao is as easy to understand as getting homework on the level of 2nd grade when you're 15; he absolutely wants to protecc his sister(and she's clearly the queen of the castle), he likes Ishihara, and he's anazingly pure, though credit where credit is due, he slowly grows more perveted as the story continues due to the circumstances he ends up in, with Satsuki and co., which i actually like about him.

Satsuki, WHO IS THE BEST BY THE WAY, is quite...passive towards everything, except Nao himself, shunning most things with a blank expression or a smile at most. She's got this mindset, ''No matter how much i love Nao and whisper his name while laying in bed, we'll always be childhood friends,'' which...sure, whatever, but i feel she's incredibly dull at the start of the series and gradually gets better, maybe a little before and after chapter 20, though i love her to death. She also gives amazing nicknames, like ''Glasses-kun'' and ''F Cup- chan''.

So, let's mention Ishihara, the one that doesn't realise her selfishness, thotiness(not a work), and straight-up how infatuated she is with Nao. I mean, this *insert insult here* tried to rush Nao into sexual intercourse TWICE, and the guy dismissed it the first time and was so overcome with stress the second time, he almost did it. I don't like her. They also tried some yandere shit with here that glitters in her character here and there, but it's underutilized and would've quite nice to see more of. Fully honest, her confession and persistence made me angry beyond words.

Obviously, i'm not covering the other side-character, like the Kouhai, Aunt, Glasses-Kun, etc because they're underused and i would've loved it if they didn't add them to the chapter just for the sake of plot; i want to see MORE of them, so try to use them more. I'm giving them a 4/10

Wow, in the process of reading this, i've realised my affection for the series is mostly my impulsive love for anything romantic, but i'll give it a 7/10 in enjoyment because in the end, all that matters is that you like what you're reading, be it ''Boku no Pico'' or ''KissxSis''. As long as you like it, eat it like your life depends on it.

Overall, sure, have a 7/10. I'd say it's a really devicive series and the enjoyment wavers depending on the mood you're in. I enjoyed Nao's emotional breakdow and depression because of the events that take place in the series, and the girls are(unfortunately, Ishihara included) good characters that i like watching for the sake of fun. So, give the first chapter a read and maybe you'll like it? Thanks for reading this!

Honestly this manga is kind of frustrating to read at points; A lot of the characters lack any form of empathy or sympathy and at times it just doesn't make a lot of sense due to the nature of how the story is drawn out.

I'd rather not go all in depth into the characters but in the main sense there's a lot of times where the characters aren't being developed through interactions but some external force and that acts as both a crux and a value to the story. There's times where I'd wish that they'd talk it out or commit to something purely ...

Just as an FYI this review is made as I finished reading chapter 60 so anything further will not be included.

Honestly it's not a bad manga, I enjoy it enough to give it an 8 and at the time of making this the overall score is a 7 which I cannot disagree with either. But I will say that some of the things in this manga keep it from being amazing, some things hold it back enough to warrant an 8 or 7 instead of a 9 or 10 and that's what I want to mostly focus on.

Story - 7
It's pretty good, it has a ... good bit of everything you except from a drama romance manga and as far as the backstories of the characters that help make and develop the plot it is an enjoyable read. The reason I gave it a 7 on its story is because it's not very new, most of the events that occur have been repeated time and time again and they do little to actually evolve it past most other manga but the background of the mc is unique and interesting enough to warrant a 7 because that is one of the unique things in the manga and it's good enough to deserve some praise for it.

This manga really does hit a sweet spot for me in terms of characters, the thing I hate most in any media are characters that are so generic I can predict all their actions and characters that have not been thought out and they are completely all over the place in their decisions. This manga has complex characters, I can see these characters having actual thought behind their decisions that either reveal their personality or match what we have already seen. Also since this is a girl fighting over guy situation it is a nice touch that each girl is developed in such a way where I am honestly on the fence about who I would want to win, I care enough about each of them to not root for anyone which is good when it comes to these romance manga.

Enjoyment/Overall - 8
Now I kind of praised this manga a lot and it does deserve praise because it is well thought out, has nice characters and nice art. The thing holding me back from going any higher is I felt like it could have been more unique, especially in the buildup of the beginning chapters. To give clarification on what I mean, at the beginning this manga has an eerie sort of feeling to it, the author put panels in of characters making faces and expressions that could be seen as evil or plotting. It gave a creepiness' like some of these characters aren't who they say they are. This can be seen multiple times from the little sister, she makes expressions like she is trying to sabotage her brother to keep him to herself, but later she is independent and nothing is ever expanded on this. One of the love interests makes blank and horrific expressions when things happen making it seem like she's trying to own the mc or that she is going to go full yandere but she never does. This creepy feeling of people not being normal was so good and got me so hooked but it was never expanded upon and I guess those panels were just exaggerated expressions. The manga isn't bad I just really would have enjoyed if those weird feelings were elaborated upon instead of just developing into a normal romance drama.

After reading this from start to finish I finally complete my first ever manga. I've never finished a manga from reading from the start of the first page to the last and with this first hand experience I can say that it was not a waste of my time.

In all honesty you might not like all the charcters in the manga but honestly i don't care because I'm focusing on the 2 main characters. With this mindeset i can say this manga is one of the best romance out there. If you don't like this manga then I suggest you to give it sometime ...

My life started to spiral into a constant stress just from reading this. Recommended.

The love triangle. A trope I'm very familiar with, and everybody is familiar with. The stress of dealing with two people you wanna date at once, how it impacts every choice you have, and both people involved have a unique dynamic between them. It's extremely stressful, interesting, and it reveals the reality of people. When love is at the end of the tunnel, the rest is merely an obstacle. However, this story started to feel… a little strange.

The story itself is about Watari-kun, who takes care of his selfish sister that basically ... considers him a dad. Alone with their aunt, no time to develop friendships, no time for a job, no time for good grades, no future ahead, nothing to save him from that, until a girl sees this as a unique quality. Of course, another one from his past has come to torment him.

It's simple, cliché, typical, you name it. Boring to an extreme, nothing stuck out, and my enjoyment was minimal, but there was something there that kept me. I couldn't tell what it was, be it the humanity in the characters, the stress Watari goes through, the selfishness from the characters. After some chapters, it was finally clear. There were no “good” people in this manga, at least in the typical way. Everybody has a selfishness to themselves that's amazingly portrayed in the manga. Everybody affects everybody, they all lie, they all scheme, they all try to get an upper hand, and it's the job of our main character to BE selfish. To do what he wants to do, and not care about being hated by one or two people. You can't please everybody, and that's just, so hard to accomplish while being who the protagonist is. People will call that a terrible protagonist, but the development was there, for the whole time.

Challenged with the constant stress of being human for once, I was pulling my hair at how much tension I was feeling for this character, for everybody. But then, they never rob him of choices, they pull misunderstandings, but they add consequences to them being there. It isn't a matter of everything going back to normal. Once something happens, the story runs with it, and changes the entire dynamic. It changes as a manga, because of what each character does. There's no base to stand on, no safety net. Hence, the shortness of the manga. It doesn't do the eternal love triangle. When something fails, it stays failed, and nobody can ever fix it.

I was reminded of that time in high school, the stress of dealing with romance, organizing time, grades, people, friends, the lies, the deceit, the weird immaturity that's displayed through all of us. It was hell for my brain, like a moment of retrospective that brought with it a spiral of things I never dealt with from that time. The hatred and the friendships that came about in those times. I could ramble about how this relates to my life, but I can tell this'll relate to many people's lives. Not in the romantic way, but in how hard it is to deal with family, with crushes, with friends, and everybody's egocentric lives.

It's a lesson on selfish people, and how that's just the most human people can be. We all want something out of the world, and when we don't, there's only suffering waiting for us. Not saviors, or martyrs. We're humans, and the winner takes it all.

Of course, it's an incredibly interesting story, which people diminish by calling it: “Oh my god, every character's a yandere”. It's a romantic, character study that shows a person that isn't something, surrounded by people that ARE that something. Accompanied by art that's pretty good, all things considered.

I wouldn't call it masterful. It's an art style that fits, that gets the job done. No moments that truly stick out. The dialogue and writing ARE the winners in this department. Every character is well-written, at least for biased me, since I've met others like it. Heard a criticism once, about how nobody acts like this, and my brothers and sisters, go outside. I'd say they could've gone the extra mile.

All in all. A manga that affected me deeply, not from a disturbing standpoint, but because I lived through many of these moments, choices, and people. It wasn't fun, and the manga isn't entirely fun. Addicting to read, and even more addicting to know what would the ending be. Yes, it's got stupid moments that shouldn't have happened, even in a real-life setting. I still, deeply recommend it.

8.4/10. I need a break from romance drama just from reading this.

I'll straight say this is a 7-7.5 manga before getting into it. This isn't for everyone and honestly the pacing could be a bit better but I feel as of ch 69 all the pieces are starting to fall into place.

Characters: This will be the biggest issue as others have mentioned. Some view them as shallow one notes or them as very complex characters. So before I start the review, i'll just say that this review is just my opinion.
The TLDR is that this manga start great and goes downhill.

Art:
Not bad and not good. In other word "serviceable".

The plot:
The story start good and engaging and like i said before goes downhill with the bad pacing and sometimes it star to gets really boring until i was thinking of dropping it.
