Saki | Manga - Recommendations

It's LITERALLY impossible you won't like Ping Pong Girls if you like Saki. I have a theory, for which I have no proof but neither doubts: every Ping Pong Girls fan is also a Saki fan.
You have teams of girls with (kind of) supernatural powers playing a game that doesn't seem like it needs them. They participate in national school tournaments to be the very best. They are also very moe and very gay. The art in PPG is totally awesome as well, although very different from Saki's.
Granted, you have a lot more variety of characters in Saki, while Ping Pong Girls focus MOSTLY in one match (I mean, MC's team vs Not-Ryuumonbuchi), and half of that match is taken up by the match (1vs1) of literally the best character I've ever seen. Ping Pong Girls is also a bit more mature. But both manga do have a similar essence. So go read it.
(You might need to watch the anime first since the part of the manga that was animated hasn't been translated yet. The anime has some filler and it might get way too moe at times until the point it becomes a little boring, but overall is good, and worth watch it if after doing it you can read this precious manga). read more

A competitive game. Saki and Chihayafuru chronicles the stories of a girl that strives to become the best at what they hope to be. In their stories, there is competition, learning, and discovery that revolves around such a game. In Saki, it's mahjong. In Chihayafuru, it's karuta. They both belong a team/club and each day improves by going up against the best of the best. By doing so, they discover not only more to the game but those around them. 

There is a decent amount of drama and comedy in both series. They also take place in a school life environemtn. Chihayafuru has more additional element for pot entail romance while Saki has a strong bond of friendship between their teammates. read more

3-gatsu no Lion addpermalink

Both Saki and S-gatsu no Lion has an interesting cast of characters where their lives involves a competitive sport. At its core, both series are lighthearted story about the experiences of characters and what they achieve in life. Do note that Saki's competitive nature more dynamics while 3-gatsu no Lion portrays slice of life in a rather casual way. But for anyone interested in a genuine story with friendship and competition, check out these two titles.

Both are sports mangas. Both main characters are almost at a pro level. Both clubs are trying to get to the Nationals and win.

The main characters are both girls who are some sort of genuises in the sport they play. The stories are similar in that they recount the trials the girls go through getting to the top. In Shion no Ou it's the boardgame called shogi. In Saki it's mahjong. In both manga, the protagonists are playing the game to get to someone from their past.
