Because of the unbearable cold-heartedness of the main character presented in the first chapter, I never would’ve expected such a tragic and heartwarming tale.
The realism of this love story is unbelievable as it pinpoints all of the cruel and heartbreaking elements of discrimination towards gays. The manga travels back in time to the characters’ past and follows the couple from their first encounter to their present day. The manga was executed perfectly by properly dividing the plot between tragedy and comedy. There are sad moments as characters go through betrayal, tragedy, and heartbreak due to discrimination. But then hopefulness appears and brightens the story.

The supporting characters contributed a bunch to the plot by bringing forth these emotions.
The couple is a perfect match for each other and makes Takaramono wa Hako no Naka even more memorable. Ei is the type of character that you would hate instantly, because he is so harsh to Gin that it is hard to read. Monologues reveal how much he refuses to acknowledge his love for Gin, but he hid them for years. However, once his past is revealed, his actions become reasonable. Gin is one of the most lovable characters you will ever find in Yaoi world. His bright personality and patience as a lover is fascinating as he endured such treatment from Ei for so many years. Despite the distance Ei keeps between them, Gin is dedicated to stick with Ei for better or for worse.
The art was actually pretty good. Regarding the settings, the most important scenes were highlighted. The character design was excellent, making characters distinguishable and fitting for their personalities. Sex scenes are graphic and intense. The chibis and characters’ exaggerations brought forth comedy. The tragic scenes were drawn to fit the mood of the manga, and it was so heartfelt that it is bound to create sympathy for the characters.
Mangaka Amasaki Yoshimi created an excellent story. Takaramono wa Hako no Naka is memorable and realistic, making this manga definitely worth the read.
