Synopsis

Itou Kaiji, now free of debt but without a penny is leeching himself in Mr.Sakazaki's new house, despite all the flirtings (extreme torment for Kaiji) from Sakazaki's daughter, Mikoko. Sakazaki attempts to kick Kaiji out, even by offering a farewell 'we never knew each other' money of 3000000 yen. While Kaiji ponders himself on the decision, he is visited by Miyoshi and Maeda, two of his 'allies' he had saved from the last part of the series.

So I guess Kaiji is just a horrible person. But that makes him an interesting character.

This is the third series, and once again Kaiji is penniless and yet roped in a major high stakes game, which he will struggle to get out of.

What's different this time around is Tobaku Datenroku Kaiji focuses on a single game, rather than a series. It's impressive that for 131 chapters, this manga focuses on only a single game, and in fact a single day. Tobaku Datenroku Kaiji continues Kaiji's struggles and is the arc directly after where the anime leaves off. If you had watched the second season of the anime, you might even recognize that the ending theme was an animation of some of this arc's early scenes where Kaiji is forced into cohabitation with Mikoko.

Quickly, the story thrusts Kaiji into a situation where he gambles for more than he's worth, a mainstay of the series at this point.

The characters in this part, both old and introduced, are compelling. Kaiji's opponent is absolutely ominous ...

The third part of Kaiji surpasses the second part in regards to its ending and the way it finally moves the narrative forward (or seemingly does), but it flounders in regards to the actual gamble. Fukumoto falls back on his old faithful, Mahjong, for this part's game, and while it is an interesting spin on Mahjong, it is still Mahjong. What I mean is that this Kaiji arc feels more like Akagi then Kaiji - it's an endless labyrinth of tiles and hands and clever complexities that Mahjong players are sure to appreciate.

While I enjoyed Akagi, despite having very little knowledge about Mahjong, and I ...
