Synopsis

Yuma Chitose is a young and carefree child, until her parents are abruptly killed by a witch right before her eyes. Left distraught and traumatized at the scene, she is shielded from the same fatal fate by a magical girl named Kyouko Sakura. Having always felt weak, Yuma believes that becoming a magical girl is the only way for her to become stronger. But Kyouko dismisses the daunting idea, encouraging the young girl to live a normal life.

Yuma's curiosity, however, only flourishes when Kyuubey appears before her and tells her that Oriko Mikuni thinks she would make a good magical girl. But who is Oriko? And why has she taken an interest in Yuma? Meanwhile, magical girls are being targeted and killed. Rumor has it that the one hunting them is not a witch, but another magical girl.

This manga prequel to Madoka Magica does an excellent job at living up to its predecessor's bizarre combination of horror, cuteness, and tragedy. There are some faults in the art, but other than that, both the story & character are solid, and if you're a fan of the anime, you'll like the manga.

The story is decent and firm, it's not the best or the most original, but it holds through pretty well and the author does a good job at telling it. It's been almost a year since I read it, and I still get goosebumps due to the ending.

The second of the numerous spinoff manga of hit anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Oriko Magica follows Kyoko Sakura as she kills yet another witch in Mitakihara City. Only this time, there's a survivor, a young girl named Yuma. Against her better judgement, Kyoko takes Yuma under her wing, but someone is murdering magical girls, and there might be a larger plan than simple serial killing at work. . .

I picked this up because I'm a fan of the to the stars fanfic, which features characters from this Manga. I was disappointed. Not because the art is kind of ugly (it is, but I could overlook that if the rest were okay). And not because the story is bad. The problem is that the story was mostly incomprehensible. The manga is simply incompetently drawn. It's hard to tell who is who, where a scene takes place, how much time has passed.

I think the basic story idea is good, but if you were to take parts of the relevant chapters from the above mentioned fanfic, ...
