The First chapter of 2001 + 5 was similar to Boichi's Hotel. Huge Machines, that have a artificial soul which protect the last human in the world and try their best to keep them. I really recommend the first chapter of Hotel! 

Collection of short stories concerning future society and their futuristic technologies, how advanced techs can affect humankind, also deals with hope and fate. 

Both deal with hope and despair over a long period of time involving many characters in a spiral of emotions and psychological conflicts.
