Gods of death. The main similarity is in the fact that most of the deaths consist of one character dying and the friend is visited by the god right before their death and the theme is essentially similar.

Less apocalyptic but more of a revamping and retelling of religious fables. There is a quest assigned the main character that drives the plot, meanwhile numerous side-adventures give you plenty of action and the characters time to shine. If you enjoyed the melding of religion and fiction in Valkyrie Profile, Saiyuki offers an identical genre.

An apocalyptic drama, X also focuses on the End of the World as a forward-point of the manga. It deals in numerous characters, all richly detailed. The hero of the story, Kamui Shirou also begins to question his role in the events that are taking place, finding it difficult to accept that he is both the catalyst and the one who will decide the fate of the world and its inhabitants.

Both Manga are adaptations of a popular JRPG. The two manga take the story you're familiar with and translate it to the printed page with a few changes here and there story and length wise. The Valkyrie Profile manga takes a lot of liberties with the story, and leaves out a lot of critical information so playing the game before reading is recommended. VP is rather short and doesn't introduce anywhere near the full cast of characters, but manages to deliver a decent 'companion story' if you've played the game. Suikoden III is much more complete, and is truer to the  read more
