Demons' Crest, a series written by immensely popular author of Sword Art Online and Accel World, Reki Kawahara. This review is for the first volume of the Light Novel and not the webtoon, I read this volume in Japanese.
This story starts off with a class of 6th graders who are invited into a VR facility called Altea, in this facility they play a game called "Actual Magic" which is basically the world's first full dive game. The game system has many resemblances to SAO but it's unique enough that it isn't a blatant copy of it. The catalyst of the story is the characters
...
find out that the game world and real world have fused together, causing them to be able to use the game system in the real world. But the game system becoming reality also has its dangers too.
The characters in the series are quite memorable and have distinct personalities, our main character Yuuma is a logical thinker who is levelheaded and tries to figure out the best solution in the problems he encounters, this made the story feel satisfying and not made me put the book down in frustration. The second main character is Yuma's twin sister Sawa, I like the twin dynamic between both of the characters since I'm a twin myself, it felt logical and not forced. The supporting characters have their own personalities and dynamics which made the story feel lively and not just some words on a page.
The art throughout the first half of the volume is really good, it's illustrated by Horiguchi Yukiko who is actually ABEC/BUNBUN's older sister (illustrator for SAO), and something tells me that she wanted to put some extra care into these illustrations. The detail in the color spreads make the world feel alive and the character designs are really clean.
To conclude, Demons' Crest is a series with a lively cast and a sort of re-hash of the VRMMO Game genre (in a good way), it doesn't feel like one of the recent generic isekai and it really shows how good Reki is with coming up with good ideas at the beginning of his stories, just hoping that this the quality for this series continues with the next few volumes that eventually do release.
