I just want it to be on the record that I was planning to give this story a 7 at best and a 6 or 5 at worst. Like, above all else- I was having fun.
I mean, was this story absolutely ridiculous and managed to surpass all the logics of cooking, physics, and proper plotting? Of course it was! But despite Abella kneading dough and eventually, somehow turning it to cutesy, aesthetic little macarons, her inability to choose dresses without at least fifteen bows, and a single macaron actually being able to stop a national war- I was fine with it. I knew I
...
had to turn off my brain and embrace the chaotic yet fastly-paced way the FL had risen to the top despite all adversities, and that was okay. I had fun for a while, and while this story probably did not intend me to laugh at certain plot ploints- it made me laugh. It was so funny that I felt a purifying sensation to my crumbly, dark soul- and that has always been what's important to me.
However, the reason why my score and would-be love for this manhwa dropped to an all-time low is something you would consider trivial, maybe even petty: the last few chapters. The last few chapters of this manhwa has been spent redeeming the antagonists of this manhwa: dark dragon human-racist guy and Abella's former sister-in-law with a brother complex. Like, I can NOT stress how agonizing this redemption arc had been. Look, I'm all for people changing or whatever but some characters, and people for that matter, just do not deserve a redemption arc. I mean, these antagonists are top of the top a-holes with a degree in annoying the fuck out of me. The dragon guy hated the very scent of humans and was the one planting evil ideas on the girl with a brother complex's (GWBC) head like I don't know, poisoning the cows for a start? Like, I'm sorry- I get hating humans but what did those poor, harmless cows did to you??
It's not like GWBC is so innocent either, this lady was far worse in my opinion. This girl literally planned on starting a national war just so Abella could not operate her dessert cafe and die a terrible death- like, excuse me? And even if you can forget and forgive all of that, which, by the way- is horrible because it would've resulted the loss of millions of innocent lives- she literally had a pregnant woman kidnapped and threatened to have her unalive if the FL doesn't stop... wait for it... living her life, minding her own business? This people did not deserve a redemption arc at all, and my love for this story for being so campy had ended because THIS WAS THE LAST REMAINING CHAPTERS. They weren't even punished for their crimes like I hate it, I hate it, I hate it.
On a good note though, I know I just said this story was terrible but the reason why I couldn't give it a 1 so heartlessly is because rant aside, this story actually has qualities I rarely see in OI manhwas. The FL could stand up for herself and her character has always been consistent, and for the most part, the ML has been respectful. Maybe the horrible characters I mentioned earlier shouldn't have gotten a redemption arc but there were minor antagonists who got what they deserved, and overall the story was nice although wrapped loosely towards the end. So, even if I wasted like two paragraphs and so hate-typing the fact that this story gave them of all characters a redemption arc, honestly, it was camp. For the most part, at least. If you could turn your brain off all the way and enjoy the sweet chaos, you're in for a ride.
I was honestly set on giving this a solid 3 for that reason but her dresses were so atrociously bad and I'm just that terribly petty, I had to lower it to a 2.
TL;DR: CAMP.
