Unknown Caller is a collection of three interactive short stories making use of the phone camera.
Each chapter is self contained with the plot leading up to a single jumpscare. The first one is forgettable and pretty much introducing you to how the camera aspect will work. I believe the second one is the best with tension being built nicely to the final scare. It was the only story that felt justified existing outside of the interactivity. The third one provides the best scare, but the single scare is the only thing memorable about it. I don't expect much plot out of single chapter horror, but
...
at least give me something to be scared about throughout the chapter. The stories are too overreliant on the gimmick to get anything higher than a 5.
The characters are just props for the scare. Each person gets just enough to say and do to progress the plot. They don't do anything and aren't memorable in the least if we even learn their names in the first place.
The art is the best part of the entire anthology. It's nice to look at and the monsters shrouded in darkness look absolutely terrifying (it's a shame it only happens twice). I will count the interactive portion as part of the art for this rating. When the camera is opened, it showcases the least scary tiktok/snapchat 3d character filters. If you arent expecting it they could be scary, but I couldn't help but laugh especially at the last one. The only somewhat chilling part was when the fake phone call happened. Otherwise, it's just a gimmick.
Fun fact, I believe this is the first series I ever read on webtoon when I first downloaded the app 7ish years ago and I'm dissapointed I didn't enjoy it as much as I remembered. The camera filters didn't age the best and I wanted more than just the gimmick. I didn't really care for it when I read it this time. If you want to experience the camera gimmick which isn't really anywhere else on Webtoon, read this series. If you're expecting a genuinely good horror anthology don't bother.
