If you're in the mood to read a disturbing, psychological manga that contains violence, rape, and incest; Tetsu x Riku is a perfect choice. All that aside, its actually quite a gripping story that you can't help but keep reading even if you find the content disturbing.
Its classified as a yaoi, but the main character doesn't seem to really care about the gender of his "victim" (he even has sex with a female at one point but he is mostly surrounded by men since he's in a boy's school). Its also never clearly states if Tetsu prefers men but since its a yaoi I suppose
...
its assumed that he does.
Story (8): Tetsu x Riku is the prequel to Shiiku Gakari Rika and is about a boy, Tetsu, who along with his littler brother (Hiro) witnessed the rape and suicide of their mother. On this day, Tetsu realizes his strange desire to replicate his mother's rape every time he has sex. He calls his victims "mama" and asks them to say "save me" as he has sex with him. Knowing his disposition, he chooses a high school that's infamous for having a group of students known as the Salon who have sex with each other in a sort of hierarchy (the ones that are basically "whored out" are known as "breeders"). Tetsu meets another boy, Rika, who seems to have the same kind of habit and starts a relationship with him. Rika also joins the Salon. All the while, Tetsu's love for his brother, Hiro, soon turns sexual.
Art (9): I like Motoni Modoru's art and I think her style is very fitting for the psychological genre. Characters a very distinguishable and not hard to tell apart from each other.
Character (9): The personalities of the characters are very well done. Tetsu's way of thinking is pretty disturbing and its made very clear his personality is abnormal and the thoughts that go through his mind are well presented to the reader. Personalities of the other boys of the Salon and the emotional damage Hiro goes through are also well presented.
Enjoyment (8): Although its disturbing and contains many taboo subjects, its a well written story that will most likely make you feel some type of emotion. I personally enjoyed it for the quality of the story, its quite a psychological trip into the disturbing mind of a human being like Tetsu. If you're hoping for a yaoi with a lovey dovey ending its your best bet to look elsewhere. Although there are many rape/sex scenes, the fact that all (except one) are homosexual doesn't seem to be a huge factor. But maybe it is? Its up to you to decide that.
Overall (8): As I said I enjoyed it and I believe its a story that leaves a huge impact.
