Manga: Salad Days
Both these mangas are a series of stories (that may or may not be revisited) about love during the teenage years. The aforementioned stories do not necessarily end up in a happy ending. Salad days is not ecchi, but its stories make an impact on the reader.

Manga: Umibe no Onnanoko
If Girlfriend intrigued you then Umibe is a much darker take and a far more developed character study of teenage romances not being some fluffy high school sweet heart experience but a possibly more destructive experience. For both girlfriend and Umibe the male main character side is explored heavily. If you like Girlfriend you'll more than likely like Umibe

Manga: Natsu no Zenjitsu
Readers will enjoy this primarily for it's more uncomfortable aspects. I always got a taste of bile in my mouth after certain stories in Girlfriend. Well Natsu is different in that it takes place in a romance between two adults but as the story progresses and is developed you can kind of get why they are similar, just the feeling it leaves. I loved both, but both enraged me at many moments.
