Theseus no Fune was a complexed and interesting read. It draws inspiration from the well known paradox of the Ship of Theseus and it makes it into a mystery thriller.

Originally thought about in Greece and expanded into modern times, the paradox of the Ship of Theseus has been talked about amongst philosophers and thinkers, but the concept has remained the same: is an object the same object after its components have been replaced over time? This is what the manga tries to analyze under different points of view.

However, at its core this manga is first and foremost a mystery thriller, as it tries to ... get the reader to think critically. You start the series with the classical whodunnit story, and it expands it into something more, with a focus on the family and destiny.

The characters are three dimensional and real, with dreams, aspirations and flaws. This is where the paradox of the ship gets talked about throughly, in the stories of each of the characters and their “stories”.

A tv show has been made from this series, that I have no idea if it is loyal to the manga, but I’d give it a try if you prefer a different kind of media.

All in all it’s a series that I highly enjoyed for its critical thinking but felt a little disappointed under the mystery aspect. Granted, it does play an important role in the series to work well, but it felt like a subplot in the grand scheme of things.

A very very interesting read for the people who want to “big brain” on their manga.

"Theseus no Fune", written by Toshiya Higashimoto, was a pleasant surprise for me. In my exploration of manga, I was keen to read this manga, not only to discover the author, but above all because it has had very good critical feedback in France. Really? It was justified!

I found the writing of the characters remarkable. The author cleverly explores the different sides of her characters' personalities, allowing readers to become emotionally invested in the story. The relationships between the characters are complex and nuanced, adding an extra dimension to the issues at stake. Moreover, the motivations and dilemmas facing the characters are well-constructed, creating ... captivating situations all the way through.

On the technical front, the author's cutting and drawing style are quite clean. Higashimoto's drawing style is both realistic and expressive, with precise linework and rich facial expressions. What really appealed to me was the perfectly balanced narrative rhythm, alternating between intense and quieter moments, allowing the story to unfold in a fluid and engaging way. For a thriller, that's a pretty good point.

Finally, what remains interesting about this manga is the complexity of the issues at stake. This is one of the most fascinating aspects of the work. The author tackles themes such as identity, destiny and the consequences of our choices, creating a deep reflection on human nature, particularly on the protagonist's side. The story's special feature is time travel. This concept is used in an innovative and intelligent way. It allows the events the author wishes to show us to unfold smoothly, while avoiding the clichés associated with time travel. This subtle, thoughtful approach makes the work all the more captivating, while offering a reflection on the nature of time itself.

In conclusion, "Theseus no Fune" is a highly interesting manga that deserves all the attention it has received. Toshiya Higashimoto's work stands out from other mangas in the genre. I highly recommend this series to all fans wishing to discover something different.

Although the beginning felt a little bit rushed, I feel like this was one of the top mangas of 2017 (this is my first review of a manga, so it may not be a great review):

story:
The story took place in a small village in Hokkaido. Tamura Shin the protagonist, is trying to figure out if his father was the one who killed 21 people in a poisoning attack at an elementary school sleepover. The story follows a erased kind of plot, and both series uses murder as its central plot

Characters:
Most of the characters writing were ok, but the development of Tamura Shin was one ... of the best character writings i have ever seen in a murder mystery. He faced number of hardships after being known as the murderers son, and it was very emotional to see that he still continued and persevered to find out if he was actually a murderers son

Overall: I got into this manga series right after watching the drama series, expecting a emotional roller coaster of a ride just like the drama, and it actually delivered. I highly recommend you to check out this manga if you are into psychological mystery genre.
