The true value of this series lies within the complexity of the characters. It is a very psychological work.

First I would like to address two issues. First, people have an issue with the age gap between the two main characters, but I feel like this case deserves a special, unbiased outlook. Second, this is not a depiction of Stockholm Syndrome: this isn't really a kidnapping. It's more like she ran away from home and he is taking care of her. What a ride Sachi-iro no One Room was, starting off strong and continuing to do so for a while. It's an emotional ride that doesn't exactly make you sad to the point of crying, but for you to empathize and understand what types of relationships there are. After finishing this manga, I can confidently say... It's really good, but almost completely ruined.
Crazy that other reviewers only read 3 chapters or so and make a full review on a manga, but I'll try to write this diligently.

It's the journey and not the destination that matters
As much as you may hate the ending, you can't deny it's a great series and the ending makes the most sense.
The message is that people are meant to be stepped on and used so other people can be happy. It's a very sadistic message.
But that's the charm of the series. Unafraid to dive into human toxicity and explore touchy subjects like abuse and trauma.

I suspect that those that have gripes with the ending might have missed a big part of the theme, or maybe have been a bit too attached to the prospect of a romantic wedding ending. I read the story knowing the ending beforehand, and maybe my opinion could have been completely different had I been blind-sided. Still, I think a big part of Sachi-iro no One Room is moving on and deciding for on your own terms what happiness is for you, regardless of tragedy, loss, or abuse.

“I want to define what my own idea of happiness is”

At first I was reluctant to read this manga because I assumed it was horror, and it was pretty obvious that there was a romantic relationship between the victim and her abductor, which I thought was pretty messed up. However, 5 months later (sushhhh) I decided to give it a try. BOTH of those assumptions were completely wrong, this is not a horror or romance and it’s probably one of the best stories which revolves around a plot or theme of kidnapping. (It’s more of a psychological if you’re into that)

Sachi, 14 year old girl. ... All of the characters are extremely complex and wonderfully constructed, but she is the main character of this story and victim of abduction. I absolutely adore her character because she has been crafted by the author with such inferential depth and meaning. Of course, her backstory is dark, but I think that’s a default for these types of plots. All her life, her parents had abused her. She was also severely bullied in school, everyone knew, but they turned a blind eye. It got to the point where she was so overwhelmed with negative emotions that fear didn’t bother her anymore. She wasn’t capable of producing normal human reactions. She barely knew anything about the real world as nothing had ever been done for her. She lived all her life without knowing what the concept of happiness was. She refers to herself as if she were a different person, using “Sachi” instead of pronouns such as “I” “me” “my” etc, which shows the incapability of living her own life. This is probably how she viewed pain too, if her hand was to be crushed she would look at it as if it belonged to somebody else.

Now, this is where Sachiiro no one Room is different from other abduction stories.

The plot doesn’t follow the cliched “Trying to escape from my kidnapper while the author attempts to justify his actions due to a tragic backstory :D” route, no, Sachi views this sudden turn of events in her life as a new beginning. She wants to start over, this time knowing what happiness is. Her abductor, which she refers to as “Oniisan” (Older brother), is her only source of happiness in her life and the only person who was ever able to genuinely love her, whether you choose to view their love for each other as platonic or romantic. Despite what it may seem, this story does not depict Sachi developing Stockholm syndrome in any way. The two main characters do have a large age gap, but I wouldn’t assume for that to be troubling, because at a certain point the story pretty much establishes that their relationship is not romantic in any way, although it could seem so at the start as Sachi is not capable of properly identifying emotions such as love, therefore mislabels their relationship. (Which is also building on the depth of the psychological aspect of things, but I won’t spoil. Oniisan obviously does not see Sachi in a romantic way, though.) I personally have not caught up to this manga, but it is definitely not a horror in any way. Oniisan does not torture Sachi, and has only cared for her. Their relationship is the focus of Sachiiro no one Room as well as character development and recovery from traumatic events. I highly recommend this and please do not drop it at any cost, it might seem heavily cliched at the beginning but it is an amazing manga and gets better later on.

There are many interpretations of this story but I think the issues explored throughout it are portrayed in such a beautiful way where it will leave you crying for no reason between chapters. (Haha might just be me)

Of course, it isn’t for everyone and I won’t force you to read it, but it is worth a try because it is truly captivating and will definitely change your view on the world. I can’t say much about it because I don’t want to give away any spoilers oof. There is also a live action which I haven’t watched yet, and the English translation for the title is “A Little room for Hope” or “One Room of Happiness”

i got curious because i read a tweet that the live action drama series was cancelled on some parts of kanto region because the plot is controversial. after reading the first few chapters, this manga is problematic in so many levels. the heroine is a 14 yr old girl while her stalker/kidnapper is a 26 yr old man. It is easy to dismiss this story. A quick glance at the synopsis paints the picture of a romance blossoming in a rather unconventional setting. A macabre love story between a kidnapper and their victim. A case of Stockholm syndrome intertwined with a suicide pact. Such a premise sounds edgy at best. Cliched, at worst.
This one story, however, is anything but generic. For it could not exist anywhere else but within the confines of that small room they shared.
The story delves deep into difficult themes. Generational trauma. Abandonment. Abuse. Suicide. The pursuit of happiness and purpose. And above all, living with the aforementioned. Although the ... story is all but light-hearted, it is not overwhelmingly depressing. Its tragic themes are introduced and tackled in a more thriller-esque way, and, moreover, they are (more or less) resolved in a believable way – which is another strength of this manga. Its two main protagonists are, despite their neigh-unlikely traumatic backgrounds, completely authentic. Their relationship, though seemingly impossible itself, and its dynamics, their character growth – they are all believable. Although far-fetched, they feel and act like human beings.
While there is much to praise regarding the story, this manga also has its fair share of problems. Most notably, it struggles with pacing. This becomes starkly evident in the latter chapters. While the story’s conclusion is (arguably) not problematic by itself, the ending feels rushed. The author could really use few more chapters to properly wrap up and avoid the methods which were used accelerate the story’s conclusion. Another downside of this manga are the characters. As mentioned before, the protagonist duo is wonderfully crafted. Other characters, however, fall short in comparison. While there is little reason to complain about side and throwaway characters being generic, there is an important character who seems vastly underdeveloped and thus incomprehensible, despite having a whole chapter dedicated to their backstory.
Also, certain parts require quite a bit of suspension of disbelief.
The art in this manga is neither impressive nor underwhelming. Certain panels can invoke a feeling of eeriness, creepiness, discomfort, and anxiety – or joy, happiness, and relief. There are a few wonderful double-page spreads as well. Other than that – generic.

I would not recommend this story to everyone. You might find it hard to relate to the characters – their stories are blown out of proportion, after all. However – perhaps it is only by observing another’s trauma being taken to its extremities that we can realize the gravity of our own.

I was right about reading this manga by just reading the title " One Room of Happiness" which caught my attention. Usually, I think once or twice before utilizing my time in reading mangas if it would be worth it or not but this time I just read this without a second thought.

This manga tell a story surrounding Stockholm syndrome. The reason behind it and what is the relationship between kidnapped and their victim. That's not only the main premise of this manga. Its also explore a lot of philosophycal topic, they explain it beautifully. Just like the title says, happiness. One could not easily define what happiness is. Is it money, family, friends, partner. Both our MC are looking for this happiness on their life adventure. We will follow their journey to find it.

Early on, the story only focus on the kidnapper and the victim. And as the story goes on, there will be a lot ... of new characters. Everyone fill their role perfectly. Not a single characters goes to waste. The pace is easy to read, at least it was for me. This is my first time reading a long manga and I'm not confused or anything. It have occasional flashback to give more backstory to the characters. This thing make you care more about them. The characters also like to crack a joke here and there. So its not always serious all the time.

Sometimes the dialogue is hard to digest. Because like i said above, it taps into philosophycal too. Not really a bother though. In fact, that's makes this manga better. Its using its full advantages as a form of literature to the fullest. The relationship between characters also got written well. People can change, personality can change. The growth of our MC is really something. To the point of you compare the opening story with the ending, they looks like two different person. Its very satisfying to see when people learn from their mistake. Other side characters influence also help to shape the MC personality.

This is my first time encountering a villain in anime/manga i consume. I can say that they doing a great jobs making my emotion go unstable. And its not me alone who really really hate the antagonist, its so funny to see other reader comment about it too. That's a good sign of course. I'm definitely enjoy every single chapter. The art is beautiful, the background is beautiful, and the characters design also beautiful. Expression of each characters gives resonate within the manga panel.

My favorite characters from this manga is the Detective. Good thing he have his own spin off manga which you can read if you crave more story revolving around this manga. There's also a live action TV show, will definitely watch it later in the future. I really wish this will get adapted into an anime really soon tho. It would be great. Maybe there's a chance now, considering this manga is now finished. So, should you read this? Yes, i really reccomend it if you want a heartwarming story of people struggling living this life. Maybe you can learn one or two advice from this manga so you can overcome your problem. Thank you for reading my review.

Sachi-iro no One Room is not a romance series, please don't come into this manga seeking that experience. Sachi-iro no One Room is a Psychological Drama seinen that explores Clinical Depression, Abuse and Sexual harrasment and assualt. You may have read the description, you might have also realised that I didn't mention Stockholm Syndrome. Thats because this story doesn't tackle that subect and I will talk about that as well.

Sachi-iro no One Room caught my attention a week ago and I have read all chapters as of now up to the latest chapter 52 in the course of about a week. TL;DR Sachi-iro no ... One Room is a good psychological thriller about a kidnapper and his victim which seeks to tackle dark themes through a mature lense and an engaging story - it seemlessy transitions from a dark slice of life kidnapper victim relationship with a healthy blend of psychological drama - into a Death note style cat and mouse game between a detective and a criminal, before turning into a what seems like a sort of coming of age, off the books detective story with a quirky buddy cop dynamic. To say reading the description that I at the latter half of that couldn't be any further from the truth.

Before heading into the review I mentioned that I would like to talk about stockholm syndrome within the story; or more so the lack of it. Many people may be turned of by the description of the series write it off as a Killing Stalking clone. There is no romance in Sachi-iro no One Room, the relationship is entirely platonic; the relationship between "Oniisan" and "Sachi" is closer to that of a father and daughter or brother and sister. Now you may have also read the first chapter were these two characters promise to marry eachother. This happens but it relates back to Sachi's abusive life and the promise has ulterior motives behind it - It does not mean that these characters will enter a sexual relationship. It's been 52 chapters and there has been no signs of a sexual relationship. However, what you will find inside the relationship between "Oniisan" and "Sachi" is a surprisingly poignant tale of two broken people trying to cope and better themselves. This alone is worth reading the series for.

Sachi-iro no One Room has a good albeit it has a sort of identity struggle in it's genres; whilst the themes are consistent throughout the story - the story is not at all consistent, and this is not a critique, stories need new developments to stay interesting, one way to make a story more interesting is by playing with it's genre, some of the best stories use unconventianal story telling and change their genres (Cowboy Bebop, Baccano! where the two best examples I could think of). Let's not forgot that the story is still developing, and this review is based off only what i assume is a chunk of the full story, their is always the chance that the story could take a nose dive or it could be the next big masterpiece of our generation; however what I know is that the story is a dark (sometime fun) and engaging Psychological Drama with an intense Cat and Mouse kind of buddy cop undertone. At points the story can get very intense and reel you in, even when it seems like the story is slowing down, you're pulled back into the rabbit whole with a series of new revelations and conflicts to keep the story engaging.

The art is fine, its not that great, doesn't mean its bad. Sachi is stereotypically cute in her appearance, Oniisan and the cast are just about par for the course in any Manga. The quality of the art is fine, very consistent. All in all fair art - decent character designs, solid backgrounds.

[Disclaimer - past this point there's going to be spoilers; read my TL;DR if you don't want spoilers because talking about my thoughts past this point might dip a bit into spoiler territory - but i think that it's important to mention for the sake of the review]

This series has fantastic characterisation, characters are engaging. They are not black and white characters; Despite what you may think Sachi is not purely innocent - this helps humanise her a lot, she suffered a lot and she was a victim, but she also tries to manipulate people, even attempted murder at some points. All of this fits in with her charcater motives and her backstory. Oniisan is a broken soul, in my opinion he suffer, or at least did suffer from Clinical depression, he's neither sachi's saviour or her kidnapper, He's a broken soul trying to fill the wholes in his heart - He's like a father who lives vicariousely through his children. All of this aligns with his backstory and chacrter motives. As aformentioned it creates a very unique bond between the two leads of the story, esentially they're both manipulating eachother and this has climaxed in the last few chapters into a really good story and a satisying arc in the story. Minor characters such as Matsubase and Yashiro serve as good foils to the charcters, especially Yashiro to Sachi. Matsubase and Yashiro are unique in their own right as characters who serve as both supporting and antogonists - their also very likeable easy to root for.

While I think that the story has great cast of interesting characters, the same cannot be said for the Villians - in this case Sachi's mother (her abusive parent), Matsubase's mother (Another abusive parent), Sachi's teaecher (Sexual Assualt and rape) and Oniisans Grandfather (Rape) - I didn't mention Matsubase or Yashiro, because I don't think their villians, their not really evil, however these charcters are. Oniisans Grandfather is bland - the rape serves as a plot device for some of his world views and it's fine, he's a nminor villian so i can let it slip. Sachi's teacher was a very big let down, for such an important villian in the early few chapters of the series, his characterisation is just super bland - For such an important character he's basically given zero motive for anything he does, more so why he decided to pretend to be the kidnapper of sachi. I think Sachi's mother and Matsubase's mother are fine, their characterisation is not black and white; but the story also isn't sympathetic to them, it's implied that sach's grandmother might have been abusive to Sachi's mother and her husband is also cheating on her and It's said that Matsubase's mother suffers from a Mental illness. In the case of Sachi's mother im expecting more from her later on in the story, but she's being built up to become a good villian.

Sachi-iro no One Room was enjoyable; At everypoint of the story so far its kept me engaged in the story and the characters, with an interesting psychological drama. This story is worth reading now and I get the feeling that the story will get better.

It’s a story that wasn’t really what I expected, in a very good way.

The MAL description does make it sound like it could be a trashy yandere romance, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. In the first place, contrary to my expectations, it didn’t go down the obsessed yandere route like in Happy Sugar Life. It also doesn’t go down a typical romance route where two people forced into some situation develop feelings for each other somehow and everyone is all smiles and we accept the situation happily (think those shoujo where some forced marriage ends up well despite the initial abuse and ... somehow everyone is okay with it)

It’s not even romance, despite the romance tag on one of the sites I found it on. It’s a portrayal of a complicated relationship based on strange dependence and differing motives.

Two people with their own complicated circumstances end up in their current situation, deciding to play their role of kidnapper and kidnapee for various reasons. It’s a relationship based on benefits, not out of love, so we can, for now, avoid the issue of whether we can stomach kidnapping for love reasons.

Either way, the manga makes it clear that the whole kidnapping situation is unacceptable in society. At the same time it also manages to show how for Sachi, it is much preferable to whatever life she could have had. It’s hard to decide what I want to happen in this story because what is good for the characters are objectively considered a bad thing. Whatever the reasons behind it, kidnapping was not the right choice - but what if it was the best choice? Dilemma ensues.

The characters are the main draw for me. Both main characters are smart and aware of their situation, not being brainwashed, tricked, or clueless about how complicated or wrong the situation is. This allows them to have interesting interactions where they can discuss, compromise and weigh cost-benefits with each other. One important thing is that the interests of the two are not necessarily aligned - it’s not a “protect our safe haven, us against the world” situation. While the-world-is-the-enemy seems to be somewhat true given the circumstances, the “us” part doesn’t hold so true due to their misaligned interests and the fact that their priority isn’t always something like being together always/maintaining status quo. They also change over time and are likely to continue to do so - it will be interesting to see how they end up affecting each other.

The story starts off a little slow and even slice-of-lifey, but it gets better. It’s a manga that starts out with just two people in a wrong situation that seem to be making the most out of their lives for the moment. But as expected, things really get complicated after the initial chapters, and it gets more interesting as more is revealed later and the facade starts to crack. The characters are really interesting, and while we’re privy to a lot of their inner thoughts we’re probably just barely scratching the surface of it at the same time... the characters themselves probably don’t understand all that well what they’re truly thinking or want.

How are things going to end? How should it end? Is a good end even possible, because such a thing can’t be easily available to criminals, also I’m not sure the current situation is a good one... And in the first place, the definition of a good end for these people seem to be twisted in more ways than one... Either way, it’s really interesting to see things play out, and my enjoyment value is high for this series due to the interesting characters. The art is also great when conveying expressions (very nice empty/crazed/scary/etc looks).

Entertainment wise, story wise and character wise, it’s definition a read worth your time. If you like complicated and you like drama, then plus points for you too. Likely one of the more memorable ones amongst the common stories nowadays.

Sachiiro no One Room is a manga that’s morally wrong. Despite this, you can’t help but root for the happiness of a kidnapper. It’s weird. All things in the manga point to you hating the situation and thinking it’s creepy or weird. After all, a man who seems to be in his 20s kidnaps a 14 year old. In addition to this, this man is a former stalker of her. However, the unsettling narrative that’s built at the beginning is immediately changed by how strangely happy the victim is about her supposedly horrible situation.

The victim’s name isn’t disclosed, but she’s given the name Sachi by ... her kidnapper as a way for her to move on from her past and live a new life. Sachi meaning happiness. Personally, as I read and learned more and more about both the kidnapper and victim, I started to think that this was fine. It’s strange. How could it be okay for a 14 year old to be kidnapped? The manga does its best to make you think that it is fine. And well, it worked. At least, for me it did. Sachi is a victim of severe abuse from her family and bullying from her classmates. She regularly gets beaten, isolated, and even handcuffed to her room by her parents. Yet, she does nothing. She doesn’t speak a word or express emotion. All because she’s given up and doesn’t even have the will to resist. For her, anything was better than the life she was living. And well, it seemed that anything also included being kidnapped. Sachi is trapped in a room with her kidnapper which leads to her being absolutely ecstatic. She tries new things which she’s never tried before, she gets treated as a human being, and she doesn’t have to face her past trauma. Nothing could be better for her. Fortunately for her, her kidnapper happens to be a pretty nice guy. The guy isn’t creepy or weird. He just seems like a normal guy. He doesn’t exhibit any weird feelings of lust towards Sachi and he doesn’t try to exploit her either. It really does make you think, “why is he doing this?” Seeing them together gives a feeling of joy. At the same time, knowing that the law is being broken gives a sense of dread. The manga constantly reminds you that this happiness is temporary.

The manga overall gives a strong sense of melancholy which happens to be a feeling I like when reading these type of manga. There are of course problems with the manga such as people being almost unrealistically cruel and assholey. It isn’t perfect. For me though, it makes up for this with the way it presents itself. The manga doesn’t try to do 1000iq moves that don’t really make sense nor does it try to make itself deeper than it is. It hammers in themes and ideas through the characters learning about themselves and through them experiencing new things. Overall, Sachiiro no One Room is a great manga which made me feel like a bitch with how easily it was putting me on the verge of tears. Although, I can definitely see how the manga be seen as a total turn off with its premise along with the fact that it wants you to cheer for a guy who kidnapped a middle schooler.

It is quite similar to the Japanese drama "Mother" and the South-Korean remake (also called "Mother").

So in short: Contrary to the description of this manga, the story actually isn't as disturbing as one might think at first. (e.g. a perverse guy stealing the girl, and the girl getting Stockholm syndrome or such)
The right and wrong in this manga is not clear, there are grey colored characters.
That is the reason why i like this manga, but i still have to understand more of the main characters to rate this.

I'm not sure what is supposed to be a spoiler and what not, so ...

This manga will always have a special place in my heart, and even though I personally didn’t love the ending of the manga I also don’t hate it, parts of the ending are perfect in there execution but a single thing broke my heart, I would still though recommend this manga, if your a fan of a manga that makes you think and all that, this is the manga for you

The characters to me where fantastic Sachi was a blast and quite hilarious at times and mask was mysterious but his character truly was a star, there are other amazing side characters in it and ...
