Synopsis

When he was in third grade, Hayuma Minekoshi became entranced by the world of figure skating. After meeting a mysterious girl and witnessing her perform a mesmerizing triple axel at a competition, Hayuma resolved to learn the sport—even if he had to teach himself the basics. Despite the hardships, Hayuma persisted in hopes of encountering the enigmatic prodigy again. However, one year later, Hayuma discovered that the girl he admired disappeared from the limelight. Having never learned her name, he gave up hope of being able to find her again.

Now in his third year of middle school, Hayuma moves from his small northern hometown to Tokyo, where he has a chance to learn figure skating properly. In a twist of fate, that same mysterious girl reappears at the rink. As the two reunite, former prodigy Kisara Saotome reveals that she had quit competing in singles to try her luck in pair skating. Seeing potential in Hayuma despite his lack of experience, Kisara invites him to be her temporary partner. However, Hayuma must face difficult training to catch up to Kisara's skill level—let alone be ready to compete.

The infamous axe strikes again and this time it hits Two on Ice. After terrible sales of the first volume it was all but guarenteed. Even with the sudden ending this manga is still quite good.

Of course the ending leaves a lot to be desired, but it manages to give closure to the story without rushing the plot. The characters are really well written and the main charcaters have some nice character growth. The art is sometimes a bit lackluster, but the gorgeous double spreads make up for that.

I had no idea this series had been cancelled at 28 chapters when I was going into this as MAL has yet to mark this as a complete series, but this is the first short-lived Shonen Jump series where I felt it was really a shame that they cancelled it so early. Though I am glad they didn't try to rush a full-ending and kept a good pacing, the ending itself still leaves much to be desired as though it does leave off in a good place there are still so many plot threads that I wish we got to see develop and see through ...

Another one bites the dust - one of the most devastating SJ axes this reviewer has ever personally experienced.

Two on Ice is an ice skating manga, and the artist's style perfectly captures the dazzling motion of pair skating which isn't easy to do with static images. The art style takes pretty major influence from shoujo, specifically during the skating sequences and it's exactly the right choice.
