Just let me say I absolutely enjoy the Realist Hero series. Especially with the beginning of volume 18 with everyone preparing for war. The anxiety if they did everything they could to win. I think what frustrated me the most was the ending. Through out the volume they kept a huge secret on a way to crush Haan's charisma with a single blow that cost Herman's and Owen's lives. They spend most of the novel keeping you anticipated for. It ends up being a promotional video. A single video about the north supposedly stops the war and crush Haan's ambition taking over the south. I guess we won't know until the next novel. I felt let down at that point. How you feel about that ending? I know I was expecting more since it had such a build up to see Haan defeated by a video.

I like it all the way to the end except for how they stop him. I just don't like the ending. I wish they thought of something else.

I just found this whole war to be supremely stupid. I'm aware that not all war have to be about some ideological differences or a virtuous cause. And I knew this novel was building up for a war. But the way they had Fuuga force the issue, makes him come across as a complete maniac. Dragging the whole world into his ego-boosting grand adventure and yet for the past several volumes, the author has been promoting Fuuga as being such a great charismatic warrior.

As for the end of volume 18, I can't help but think back to volume 17. When after that whole debacle with the Giant Mech & Mushroom thing, Souma was saying how he would never allow Fuuga force him into such a predicament again. Yet this whole war was basically him seeding the initiative to Fuuga. There was nothing stopping Souma from spreading the news about the Northern Hemisphere from the get go. Sure the lack of a promo video would have meant the news would've had less of an impact, but he still could have reduced the support for Fuuga's war.

But he left it to the very end, because the author wanted to end this novel with this war. By showcasing all the new technology and magic the Kingdom has developed. So of course there was no conclusion in this volume, since the author seems to have more to show.

maybe the point was to gather everyone in one place so they can't runaway but given how the author hid every iota of logistics details from the reader, there's no way to even guess what's going to happen. He shook people in Fuuga's camp but if I'm supposed to believe they're going to stop fighting, that's not going to happen. obviously you would want to release the video before, but they said they were running behind editing it. I kept thinking for the last 2 chapters that clearly Souma was just straight up going to announce he is the only person who can open the door to the North, which would be an even greater blow after showing it. At this point, Haan has no empire to go back to, if we accept this absurd premise the author has reiterated ad nauseum for 7 books in a row. I get what he's trying to do but that's a long term thing. None of what happened at the end solves any of the immediate issues of the war. I've also long given up on the idea of anyone actually dying in this series. So I imagine the final book, Volume 20, will be Souma traipsing through the North with his best bud Fuuga. The end.
