Plot Summary

Gabi Braun and Falco Grice have been training their entire lives to inherit one of the seven Titans under Marley's control and aid their nation in eradicating the Eldians on Paradis. However, just as all seems well for the two cadets, their peace is suddenly shaken by the arrival of Eren Yeager and the remaining members of the Survey Corps.

Having finally reached the Yeager family basement and learned about the dark history surrounding the Titans, the Survey Corps has at long last found the answer they so desperately fought to uncover. With the truth now in their hands, the group set out for the world beyond the walls.

In Shingeki no Kyojin: The Final Season, two utterly different worlds collide as each party pursues its own agenda in the long-awaited conclusion to Paradis' fight for freedom.

It was two years ago that the "final season" started and even though the parts have quite a long break between them, it's still being called the final season. And now, the final part is coming sometime in 2023, and I would have to think it is going to be timed so that it will ring in the 10th anniversary of the anime series that started back in April 2013. One thing that I have never seen in too many shows is the MC becoming the final boss, and that's what happened here in the second season. The first part covers the Liberio arc, the second part covers the War in Paradis arc, and the final part that's expected to be around 6-7 episodes long will cover the Rumbling arc. Hajime Isayama is having a panel tomorrow at Anime NYC, and I get the feeling that this is when the airdate for the final part will be announced.

Just recently, a new visual of the final part of the final season came out:

The end is coming as the final arc is going to be a two-part special.  The first part will come out on March 3 with the second part coming sometime later this year.  Seeing that there's enough content for about six episodes that from the look of things the special episodes will be the length of three episodes each to finally bring the "Final Season" to an end.

The "final" final final? Or the final final to the final final? (How much longer can they drag this out? XD )

The only way I'll be satisfied is if the two cours are consecutive.  That is, some episodes airing in spring and some in summer.
Failure is always an option.

No idea on when the first part of the final arc (the hour-long episode) will be on any streaming services, if at all, but it currently finished airing on Japanese TV.  Also, the second half will be in the fall.

The rumor floating around is that, the AoT committee is not allowing distributors outside Japan to stream until several hours after it airs on TV.

Yeah, I get the feeling that it's going to be on the air sometime this afternoon as I remember, episodes didn't air until 2pm Pacific, which is about six hours after broadcast.  In any case, by the time show is brought to an end, it will have been almost three years after the "Final Season" premiered.

Well, you'd think the services would at least let their viewers know they would be streaming the episode at all by now.  No one has said a single word about it yet, which is what has me concerned.

And yes, they have been putting up the episodes on a delayed schedule for a few years now, ever since one streaming service (I think it was based in the Middle East) put up one episode a few hours before it was broadcast even on Japanese TV.

If AoT committee says silence until further notice, then silence it is.

Probably a good idea they didn’t because their servers would’ve melted if everybody knew when it would be up.

Part 3 Special:

As the rumbling continues in earnest, the Survey Corps arrive in port to get the plane ready for takeoff.  But Floch manages to show up and shoot some holes in the fuel tank before Mikasa finally takes him down for good.  The crew manages to patch the holes up, but they only manage to fill the tank halfway before they're forced to leave, as the army of Titans is breathing down their necks.  Hange goes down in a literal blaze of glory to buy everyone else time to get away.  Then Eren communicates to the group that there is no hope for a diplomatic solution, that the only way to stop him is to kill him.  The refugees from Liberio arrive at Fort Salta in time to see the airships try a bombing run, but to no avail.  That's when the Survey Corps arrive and jump from the plane to the spine of the Founder.

As I mentioned earlier, the series continues in the fall.  I'm expecting at least six episodes worth of media to close things out.

Things pick up right where they left off with the Wall Titans marching to crush all of humanity under Eren's orders, and the resistance led by Armin needing to hurry in order to confront Eren and put a stop to the rumbling.  Annie decides to flee to Hizuru with Gabi and Falco seeing that her motivation to fight has gone up in smoke. It turns out that Floch wasn't quite dead yet and before Mikasa puts him down for good, he manages to poke a hole in the plane's fuel tank forcing Hange to have to hold off the Wall Titans to get the fuel tank fixed and let Armin and company get off the ground.  And then comes the vision where Armin and company learn that there's no reasoning with Eren, and to defeat him they need to defeat Zeke.  And then it's off to the battlefield where the fate of humanity is decided.

And with the remnants of humanity stationed at a fort, the bomber planes are attacking the Wall Titans, but while they have the advantage against the Wall Titans, they are sitting ducks against Zeke.  And then Armin and company arrive, and by the skin of their teeth.  And thus, it sets the stage for the fate of humanity to be decided.  It continues to be great just as I remember it, and with that, it's another long wait with the last of it not coming until the fall.  Tough to see Hange going down, but she definitely went out fighting as she literally went down in flames.

@GridironOtaku The Final Season wasn't the final season and it needs The Final Season: The Final Specials... Whoa good planning there.

Part 3 Special 2 (END)

The series concludes with one epic desperate battle, as incarnations of past Titan wielders attack the Survey Corps. Annie, Falco, and Gabi come to assist in a two-pronged attack. But even after that succeeds, Eren and the Founder have one last trick up their sleeves, as the Founder turns all Eldians in the area into Pure Titans. In the end, Mikasa cuts off Eren's head, and the Power of the Titans vanishes forever. But this moment of peace won't last forever, even as they try to reconcile with the people of Paradis Island.

The ending credits displays the idea of peace being a fleeting dream well, as the tree where Eren's head is buried stands firm even through devastation around it.

And to nobody's surprise, Crunchyroll crashed when this came out. It was down for a half-hour before I was finally able to watch it.

Finale

And so the final battle begins with Armin trying to locate Eren within the founding Titan, and the gang run into the past generation of titans that they fight on Eren's spine. Annie and Falco end up joining the battle as Falco transformed into the Flying Titan that destroyed the Azumabito, and it's a good thing they were on the battlefield as they ended up saving Reiner and company when it looked like those titans were about to defeat them. And then Armin with to the Paths where he meets up with Zeke and as a result the Titans there switched sides. Then Levi beheads Zeke to stop the Wall Titans in their tracks. Then Jean detaches Armin's head with dynamite, and then Armin transforms into the Colossal Titan using that explosion to finish off Eren for good.

Or so they thought as Eren emerged in a new body and has summoned an army of titans to reattach himself to the Founding Titan. And then it ends with the climactic battle between Armin and Eren as while Reiner and the resistance team holds down the attachment, Mikasa goes in for the kill, while also declaring her love. After that, Armin and Eren have one last conversation together as 80% of humanity was wiped out by the Rumbling, and Eren reveals why things unfolded the way they did as this was his way of ending all conflict, all while Mikasa has had Ymir speaking into her head all this time unwilling to move past his love for the king. After all that, the battle has been won by the resistance, and titans are a thing of the past.

Three years later, the world still has conflicts, but everybody is trying their best to make this world a peaceful one, and despite everything that happened, Mikasa still holds Eren in her heart. And through the credits with a song written by Linked Horizon (who had sung all the openings before final season), humanity advanced, only for wars to tear civilization down, but through all that the tree where Eren (and later on Mikasa) is buried survived through all that. Quite a tremendous way to end this and I kind of see why Hajime Isayama insisted on having it end with these specials. It was a great show from start to finish, and just a tremendously great way to end it. After ten years, I can finally say that this was one hell of a ride.

Final Thoughts (Final Season)

This series has been amazing as everything from the animation, action, soundtrack, drama, and plot twists are all top-notch. And it's even more so with the "Final Season" as this show didn't miss a beat with MAPPA animating this instead of Wit. Seeing that it took three years to get this whole thing finished that it goes to show how much care the animation team took with this show, and the end result is amazing. And then it saves the best for last (as well as first) as everything was nicely wrapped up.

Grade: A+ (10/10)

So let me guess this straight... I managed to avoid every possible spoilers but the "infamous" part from the manga that made a bunch of people angry about the ending was Eren complaining about how he hates the idea of Mikasa not being with him for the rest of his life? Lol people are weird. Apparently CR's translation interpreted that part better than the Kodansha's manga translation did.

So after all that carnage, chaos and world destruction from Erin just to save Paradis, Paradis still ends up getting destroyed and wiped out in the future.

Anyways, what a ride. Shit's finally over. Great stuff.

Also, the very last scene with that one random guy and his dog entering the tree where Eren's head and Mikasa is buried is genius. Basically the guy is presumably going to inherit the Attack Titan like Ymir did when she walked into the tree thus matching the show's continuous theme of "conflict never ends" and "history repeats itself". Also I think that ED theme where they start singing in German mentioned something about the "cycle repeats" or something.

The final battle was cool and all, but I could have done without the epilogue. I'm not a big fan of the cyclical view of time. When it comes to story telling it always comes off like an excuse for a lack of creativity. "It's all just going to happen again." Yeah yeah, just go fart in a bottle so you can smell it all you want, but don't make me have to smell it too.

Anyway, some great epic moments in the series as a whole. The pretentious ending leaves me with just a 'meh' kind of feeling unfortunately.

Wow can't believe it's over. Also can't believe I managed to avoid spoilers all these years.
Great ending, so basically Ymir not being able to stop "loving" the king lead to 2000 years of war, until Mikasa could overcome her love of Eren and kill him. Wasn't really expecting that as the underlying theme. My only problem was the deus ex machina (like the eagles of LOTR) of flying jaw Titan Falco (ah now I get his name haha), yeahhhhh.
I didn't mind the montage at the end of endless war on Paradis. It wasn't hitting you over the head with it, it was just tgere in the background if you wanted to pay attention to it. I thought Zeke and Armin's talk was the deeper commentary on life, what's the point of it all given the inevitability of death? Don't know about its answer of the "little things" like tossing a baseball and racing to a tree but it's an interesting take (like the inevitability of war) from an interesting show and I thoroughly enjoyed it. This was an epic tale and quite an accomplishment to get it all out there, anime or not, and probably something that won't be repeated, at least any time soon. Good job Wit and Mappa and everyone who contributed to making this show.
One last thing, yeah don't know what it was but do know "fans" complained about the ending (to the point the author apologized), and don't get why, whatever it was.

That was a 10 Year plus ride...

The End???? That post credit scene sure looked like going into the tree where Ymir's weird wormy thing was.

That explanation of why Eren did what he did was very fatalistic. I knew all along he wanted the Eldians to come out heroes, but I didn't figure he also wanted to really destroy most of the world. I also didn't expect the world to basically stay divided like that, which kind of reinforced Eren's need to destroy much of it. Basically he seemed to say whether he desired that outcome or not it was going to happen, his own chains to fate made it so.

The revelation about him being responsible for his mom's death was also very much unexpected
