I guess that's technically right, but there's always room for interpretation. Shows like SAO, which have more than two girls who like the protagonist, aren't considered harem anime because that isn't the focus of the show. In Rent-a-Girlfriend, they have all the harem tropes, and the main focus of the show is the drama formed by the relationships.

If anything Chizuru's the most obvious at this point (at least in the manga) lmao. Hell the reason why there hasn't been a confession from either side yet after 200+ chapters is one of natures wildest mysteries and a big reason why this series is quite shite

Well I don't really intend to read the manga. The anime wasn't the best. I'll probably just watch the second season as it's premiering. I find it a lot easier to get through painful shows once a week lol.

Sumi is a friend that MIGHT like him, but I don't think she's in contention. I don't think Mami likes him, and I think even you are doubtful.

I'm not completely caught up. If she does confessed like tomorrow or something, I'm going to say in the alternative, the adapted material (45 chapters now, maybe 90 with s2?) certainly isn't a harem.

I think Sumi is pretty clear regarding her feelings, it becomes obvious later anyway.

As for Mami, as I said it's unclear whether she likes him in a romantic sense or not. But either way, she is directly involved in MC's relationships (which these kinds of characters commonly appear in harems)

Plus each of the girls actions/behaviour more or less revolve around Kazuya anyways, which is pretty much a staple feature for a harem

That's actually the key point.

See Walkure Romanze. It is listed as a harem despite none of the girls really expressing a "romantic" interest in the hero. But the girls are all in training, and he's the top trainer, so they all want him to be their trainer, and fight over him. Add in some fan service and slapstick scenes, and it's pretty obviously in the genre despite NONE of the girls even specifically saying they have a romantic interest.

Basically if you have 4-5 girls inexplicably revolving themselves around one guy, there's comedy and ecchi, it's a fucking harem series for all intents and purposes despite not all, or even any, of the girls having an explicitly telegraphed "romantic" interest.

like for instance imagine if the plot was "i somehow got employed as the manager of a college girl's dorm, and they're running around half naked having pillow fights, and lots of sexy stuff happens!" Are we gonna say that this is NOT a harem comedy just on the basis of the girls not specifically wanting to date that guy?

the commonality to harem series is in fact the inexplicable fact that this loser guy somehow found himself at the center of a posse of hot chicks. See "Invaders of the Rokujouma" for an example of that. It's 100% CLEARLY a harem comedy, but the aspect they're fighting over is to control the room he lives in, not his romantic interest.

the "will they / won't they" dating stuff is actually LESS core to the genre than that is. What generally makes something "not a harem" is not the dating stuff, but you check if there are any other significant male characters who get attention from the girls.

I don't mean to revive a dead forum, (I do) but I just finished High School DXD and wow it's 100% a harem. Spoilers incoming for DXD. By the end of the season two girls like Issei. Asia and Rias. Koneko hates him, and Akeno starts liking him in season two. Would you consider this a harem?
