The Netflix live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop is approaching its November 2021 release. To promote the show in Japan, Netflix announced that the program’s Japanese dub will be performed by the primary voice cast of the original Cowboy Bebop anime series. The news came via the Netflix Japan Anime official Twitter account, as well as the official English-language Cowboy Bebop account.

Spike Spiegel, who is played by actor John Cho in the Netflix Cowboy Bebop, will be voiced in Japanese by Koichi Yamadera. Yamadera also plays Beerus in Dragon Ball Super and voiced Joel in The Last of Us‘ Japanese dub. Megumi Hayashibara will reprise her role as Faye Valentine, played by Daniella Pineda. Hayashibara’s roles include Evangelion‘s Rei Ayanami and Ranma 1/2‘s Female Ranma. Jet Black, who is played by Mustafa Shakir in the new show, will be voiced by Taiten Kusunoki. Unsho Ishizuka, Jet’s original voice actor, died in 2018. Kusunoki also played Leonard Burns in Fire Force and Vulcan Haestus in Promare. Norio Wakamoto will return to play the voice of Vicious, who is played by Alex Hassell in the live-action series. Wakamoto’s long career in voice acting includes roles like Emperor Charles from Code Geass and Oskar von Reuenthal from Legend of the Galactic Heroes.

The rest of the announced Japanese voice cast list for Cowboy Bebop on Netflix is as follows (live-action casting is in parentheses):

Julia (Elena Satine) – Gara Takashima
Punch (Ira Munn) – Tsutomu Tareki
Judy (Lucy Currey) – Miki Nagasawa
Shin (Ann Truong) – Romi Park
Lin (Hoa Xuande) – Hikaru Midorikawa
Teddy Bomber (Rodney Cook) – Takaya Hashi
Mao (Rachel House) – Masako Isobe
Gren (Mason Alexander Park) – Kenyuu Horiuchi
The Cowboy Bebop live-action series will debut on Netflix on November 19, 2021. The original anime series comes to Netflix outside Japan on October 21, 2021.

Can't judge the live action adaptation without watching. Although I'm not expecting much from live action as we have already seen so many horrible live action.

Cowboy Bebop was a show way better in English dub to be fair. Not to disrespect the Japanese cast but the English dub was better. As for the original cast returning from the Japanese version it still isn’t going to making it any good. I have major issues with the casting though. First of all John Cho is a terrible choice, he isn’t tall enough and is better at playing the weird comic relief Asian dude. Not to hate on him as an actor but I don’t see him pulling off Spike Spiegal in the slightest it just seems way out of his range and Spike doesn’t need to be played by an Asian dude this is the few case where some white dude like Benedict Cumberbatch would have been the better fit but they could have also given a Japanese actor who could actually pull it off a chance as well but whatever. Hell John Cho is Chinese not Japanese so the whole PR thing isn’t in their favour. As for the rest of what’s been announced been reading some of the plot points they will be doing and it seems like it is going to be a complete shit show. Based on previous live action adaptations as well this is probably going to suck. Also just because they got the anime cast doesn’t mean it will be good.

They literally got the original English Dub cast(with a few exceptions) for the Full Metal Alchemist movie did that instantly make the movie any good? Still kind of suckled didn’t it? Having great voice actors will not make a difference if the script is still messy and the characters and story are nothing like the anime it’s based on or are terrible written in general. Obviously it hasn’t come out yet but based on what I have heard as well as previous adaptations it’s looking pretty shit but if it surprises me I’ll admit I was wrong.

I don’t see Benedict Cumberbatch pulling Spike off at all (even though I really like him as an actor). Don’t know why it should be a white guy though. They could definitely have found someone of Asian heritage that fits better than John Cho though (e.g. Andrew Koji?). Nothing against John - just not the same personality / aesthetic to do Spike I think. But we’ll see what happens, I’m hoping for the best.

Honestly I don’t think race reallly matters with Spike because he is a Martian after all. The only reason why he would be explicitly one race(most likely Asian) is for the whole red dragon syndicate to make more sense. I just think the actor needs to be very tall and slim while having the wit and charm of Spike. The reason I said white is because it’s hard to find tall slim Asian dudes unless they CG the height, which could work. John’s usual roles seem to come nowhere close with the cool compose of Spike. If he suppresses me that’s great but my expectations are kind of low at this point, especially since Live action in the past not only sucks at casting but making a decent adaptation in general. Although Cowboy Bebop is probably one of the easier source materials to adapt considering how it takes a lot of influence from film noire just put in a sci fi setting unlike say Attack On Titian, JoJo or Dragon Ball where the story is clearly made for the fluidity of anime with a heavier emphasis on the art style of the anime and can only be done properly with CGI through the whole movie to properly tell the story and there being no existing movie tropes it’s inspired by. Not say that’s a bad thing but those types of movies need a lot of CG which can either be decent or the worst thing ever. If Cowboy Bebop has a bit of not great CG with the space scenes but still captures the spirit of the characters and story the effects can be overlooked. If it’s terrible I expected it if it’s good I’ll be surprised but that’s just me.
