I'm probably not the only one here with at least decent creative writing skills who can't illustrate for shit. So why don't we team up and do artist and writer collabs? Might be a worthwhile practice for both sides regardless of how the contest goes.

It's a competition but pvp doesn't necessarily mean you can't have teams ;)

Hey, fellow writer here. Please don't do that. Even if you think it is mediocre it may actually be a great idea. By giving it to someone else you would lose all the recognition attached to it. My advice for you is to develop that idea so that you can do something with it once you are 18. Best of luck

so you can't participate when you're below 18? well that sux for me

I got a notebook full of plot ideas and short drafts, roughly 110+ and counting, can you send in more than one entry?

As long as it's not explicit/overtly sexual, go for it. Heavy ecchi/soft-porn is not allowed in general.

Yep! So long as you haven't posted those stories elsewhere, you're good to go.

also does it have to be a full on web novel or can it just be a short idea and concept which the company could build upon themselves

"Prompts"? "Marketable content in Japan"? "Easily translatable to anime or manga"? What is this b*llsh*t? Oportunity for writers you call this? I would rather call this an oportunity for Kodansha, Honeyfeed and MAL to fill their pockets out of royalties.

Prompt? What is a prompt other than a chain in the legs and arms of writers? I didn't know originality was something so bad, I thought we'd forgotten about that kinda idea after WWII. Maybe someone who never wrote (literature I mean, not manga, or at least not content intended for japanese consumers) will think this is a good chance, but a working writer with experience on the field (pro or amateur, that doesn't matter) knows their ideas are not only classifed as ""Impossible Romance"" or ""Survival Slaughter"", whatever that means. Writers knows most of their stories most of the times can't even fit into a "gender", which is not nearly as bad a prompt is.

Do you think your story will be so bad compared to what a japanese mangaka can think? Do you think it will be impossible to develop a manga after your original idea, or even an anime? I don't think so, I think we all writers can create amazing things, and even surpass any acclaimed masterpiece.

Nor do I think Kodansha thinks that. What they want is to find their next groundbreaking story. If not, then why do they specify they want "marketable in Japan" and "easily translatable to anime or manga" content? But not a story a writer, following their own ideas and freedom will create, but one a slave of their prompts would.

This disgusts me so much. Is this what someone must do in order to get published in Japan? Write pure "clicheria" and not a single idea of their own? If so, I never wanna be one of them.

but is there a way to secure it ? i mean register it for copyright or issues that might occur if someone stole the story ?

It's not allowed :(
Eligibility Checklist said:
No re-posts, rewrites, spin-offs, fanfics, collaborations, or plagiarism. The novel must be entirely your own original work created for this contest and posted only to Honeyfeed for the duration of the contest.

Yep, you've got the right idea! "Prompts" are essentially story categories. If your story doesn't follow one of the themes under the prompt, then it doesn't really belong in that category... is kind of how it works.

exedrasghoul said:

Imagine you have a situation where you have survivors... and they are being slaughtered (killed off). This prompt is essentially the horror category. See the themes: #Horror #War #Aliens #Doomsday #Post-Apocalyptic

Two questions. If I posted two chapters the first day, then posted in regular intervals for the rest of the contest period, would that affect my chances because of the post frequency rule?

Also how far can we stretch the prompts? For example, in the who needs plot prompt, can we do something like Toradora that has no real plot for the first half, but still has an overarching story? Or do we have to do something like Lucky Star?

1. Nope, perfectly fine.
2. Overarching story is okay, too. It's hard to be 100% episodic / no-plot in novel form, I think :'D

Thank you for answering! I have two more questions I'd like to ask if that's okay (I've asked the question through https://myanimelist.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/requests/new but have yet to receive a reply).

1. I have an idea which involves the suicide of someone the main character knows and they saw it happen. Is this in violation of the rule saying that it must be 13+ and for all audiences?

2. I can't draw, so I'm planning to commission a cover from a friend of mine, but that would require time (maybe up to a month). Am I allowed to start writing without a cover and later update it? Or maybe use a temporary cover and then later change it?

Wish I could participate in this as I have ideas but I feel like I'm not a good writer nor, can I commission an artist and I can't draw worth a darn either.

Plus I feel like some of the ideas I've had have already been done better by manga, light novels, and anime

I think this is dependent on how in depth you go into this. If you write about the suicide very graphically, that would be mature content warning, I believe. If it's something that happened to the character that they're learning to cope with, then I think that trigger warning isn't there. Does that make sense? I'd also wait for the response from zendesk on this answer because Honeyfeed has more experience moderating novel content than I do, and the answer you receive will be from their team.

The cover won't be "judged" as part of the judging criteria until Sept 5. I'm not sure if it's possible to edit the cover in Honeyfeed's system but I assume so. Just keep in mind, I suppose, that no cover at first might reduce reader activity on your novel (since people are usually more inclined to click on images).

I'm sorry, not for this time. We didn't consider the possibility of guardian involvement when we were creating the contest rules and changing it now would require legal discussions and revisions. So this time we will keep to the 18 years old rule. That said, we'll keep your request in mind for the next time we (hopefully!) hold this contest or another like it.

Please note that I didn't reply to your PM yet because I was waiting for response internally. But I think this is probably a question others will have, so I answered here.

I've been learning how stories work and how to write them effectively for a few years now... before this contest was announced; I was working on making a psychological, drama-heavy, absolute depressing AF, isekai novel on honeyfeed. I was excited! But, after reading some debate about handing over full rights... NO!

I know there are new updated rules (and I read them), but for me the damage has already been done. I'm not going to participate. Maybe next time when the rules are actually fair and just.

Ok. As I'm a little bit of confused about the whole prompt thing, I have a question to make.

Let's say that the story I have in mind has an "impossible romance" sort of thing in it but it's not exactly the main focus, as the characters get past of it. Would this story be disqualified because it's not evolving around that prompt?

Thanks for your message. Since I'm aware that an article was published recently with information that was designed to be clickbait and not factual, I want to be clear that the original contest wording was a mistake. The contest rules have always said that winners would receive a new contract should their series be chosen for adaptation because it was never intended that the author give up their rights. I noticed the mistake 40 minutes after announcing the contest and nothing was changed "due to backlash."

If you don't want to participate, you're of course welcome to not. But if you got your information from certain tabloid-like article, I wanted to be sure you had the facts.

Sorry, "get past of it"? You mean, they resolve the "impossible" aspect of the romance? If so, I don't see why not. There isn't anything written about how closely the story must follow the prompt, so long as it incorporates something into it. (You can also always go for "who needs plot".)

Advice to those who will engage - even if you have some very unique, or revolutionary ideas, do try to incorporate them into isekai, or RPG like fantasy setting - that is, IF you want to have any chance of success.

I personally firmly believe that most of us have ideas in our heads which other people would find rather interesting, but at the same time, there is a reason why in the last 10 years isekai stuff was so popular to this day, no matter how often many will comment with Oh, another isekai., when something new is announced.

People simply don't care for anything else, and it is a waste of time to be daring, and experimental in this era.

Well shit, this is not easy to notice. Also:

Marketability
- Appeals to a wide range of audiences (ages, genres, countries).
- Content is easily translatable to anime or manga.
- Open to expansion (e.g. more volumes, seasons, open endings).

Wide appeal precludes heavier stuff.

"Easily translateable to manga or anime" is pretty vague.

Open to expansion is somehow threatening. It feels like it's saying that if chosen and proven popular, you better be ready to write more of your story or so help us god we will come for you with our lawyers.

A story I have been nursing all throughout the pandemic, "Today I'm Thankful For", is a first person POV about the journey through clinical depression and how we self sabotage our chances at little moments of happiness. Guess that's out on all 3 counts.

---

Lastly, do we really have to publish the first chapter on July 5 and create our entry on Honeyfeed then or can we do it say July 9?

Editing is perfectly fine! You can edit anything up to Sept 5, and only minor grammar problems until Sept 25.

Yes, you're welcome to use your social media account to advertise your story. It's posting the story itself elsewhere that is the problem. Check Judging Criteria as I believe social media advertising is suggested there.

Hello, I am writing a story for the MyAnimeList and Honeyfeed contest.
It is called "Questionable Days with Yokai."
Please feel free to check it out! :)

If this is a writing contest, why is the cover a part of the judging criteria? That seems irrelevant to me. Someone with a lot of money could just commission an artist to draw a nice cover but someone else maybe can't, although both stories should be judged on the same grounds. This kind of disqualifies people for the wrong reasons I think. If it were to come to a manga publication, which was hinted at in the contest description, do we have to draw the manga ourselves? I'm a bit confused.

An engaging cover is just one of many criteria of "presentation." Engaging doesn't necessarily mean commissioned with super awesome art. It's just putting a bit more effort into it instead of having a blank black square.

No, you wouldn't need to draw the manga yourself! If Kodansha decided they wanted to publish your novel as a manga, they would hire someone to draw the art. Manga adaptations of LNs/WNs are very common in Japan. Don't worry about that.
