While not enjoying SAO I have to ask: why have the harem aspect? (besides the whole adding new girls for pandering and merch). Kirito has been consistently shown to be in a committed relationship with Asuna. Like, they're married in game. It is a major part of what little character he has. Since that's the case, why continue to add onto the spurned women's club that follows him around or introduce new possible love interests?

I feel like you could easily have a character arc around one of the girls finally moving on from the crush that they had on Kirito and finding a new love interest. I feel like if Asuna ever got into a car accident and died, one of them would be at the funeral trying to jump Kirito.

Umm and kirito developed the relationship with asuna really easily. I mean he should have struggled more to make her fell in love with him. He gets harem and I get single forever o(╥﹏╥)

What harem? The only girls that loves Kazuto are Asuna and Rika, and formerly Suguha, besides Kazuto only loves Asuna, this is pretty much clear in all the show. Don't know how you see a harem in this...

The harem stuff is probably part of the wish-fulfillment that’s all over SAO. According to the show, guys want to be the best gamers, most strongest, the smartest, and desired by people they’re attracted to.
It’s all very general teenage boy desires, and the show put a lot of effort to make Kirito, a glorified self-insert, being #1 in all aspects of his life.

I mean it’s definitely every girl in each new arc has an absolute female boner for kirito, so I can see what op is getting at. Sinon, Alice, Rika, even his sister(not biological so it’s okay??) you name it they basically have a thing for him at first at least. But it’s not harem

Seven? What? Nobody loves him in Alicization, you may say Ronye, and i may agree, but it's still not sure if it's love or just senpai's respect (unlike Tiese that clearly loves Eugeo), and the fact that Asuna and Rika loves Kazuto doesn't make the show less harem because it isn't. This way even Shigatsu wa Kimi no or Clannad can be considered harem.

Shino doesn't love Kazuto, she just admire how he is strong to deal with his fears, unlike her that doesn't have the strengt to deal with her weapon's fear.
Alice is like wtf? How can you think she loves him? Doesn't make any sense, she is just grateful that he taught her to face Quinella and fight for truth and justice, and admire him for it.
Rika, yeah, she really loves him.
Suguha loves him in the past due the time they passed together and moments they shared, like a childhood friend, but later she know that he loves only Asuna and want to be happy with his girlfriend, then she overcomes her love for Kazuto.
In fact almost all of the girls in the anime just admire him, but is not love as many people want to think.

I mean like you said to sell merch and most people want a new waifu each time a new season comes out. They even cucked the last dude that tried to take just one girl away from Kiritos harem.

If anything as this continues to go on I’m glad he sticks with what he chose way back then. He has never once thought about changing his mind which like you said helps his little bit of character he has left. At this point tho they just should convert the series to a slice of life and just have him develop a game with no problems. Cue next story focuses on playing his game.

i see several fans here trying to deny that SAO is a harem in any way. well thats both true and false in a sense. While most harem shows depict an MC with conflicted feelings for several female characters, SAO only ever depicts Asuna as Kirito's choice. Chicks falling for him is more fanservice than actual harem imo. Still I won't deny it can be called a harem.

It didn't feel like a harem for me, just having the mc interact with other girls doesn't make it a harem. Tho I will say having other girls like him in a romantic way (specially his sister) was pointless.

Well, that’s a sort of cliche element of a narrative like this. I might be wrong, but I think that by adding harem elements in a non-harem anime, probably, it might increase the audience’s stimulus to discuss, ship characters with one another, choose their waifus and so forth. So, basically, a default trick to cause more uproar among the audience to stimulate the ratings. Once again, sorry, I know that my explanation is boring.

No one loves Kirito more than Asuna do and Vice Versa and while others just have unrequited feelings to him which is Lisbeth aka the blacksmith and Suguha aka the Kirito half sister/cousin but they have already moved from him and know they don't stand the chance seeing there bond. Silica sees him as a brother, Shinon I don't think there is anything more than platonic friendship because he saved her and helps to get over of her Trauma but yeah it was absolutely cringe seeing her kissing vegetable Kirito and believing Kirito saved her just from the locket against the battle of soul collector. Alice is an AI and she does not understand anything about the world and found kirito only trusty one.

stop that fan fiction of yours, having a new girl in her arc is just like having a new character in every arc just like most anime shows

AND FOR ALL THOSE WHO THINK KKIRITO HAS GOT MANY GIRL (IN EACH AND EVERY ARC), IT IS WRONG.

SUGUHA - SHE LIKED KIRITO BEFORE HE MEETING ASUNA IN SAO ( FAIRY DANCE)

YES EXACTLY, why tf they are so blockheaded, I don't understand.

Means Code Geass is also Harem, since all the school girls die for Lealouch, same goes with Fruits Basket, exactly same thing. Irregular at the magic HS, CLANNAD are also harems. Bakemonogatari is also in the count, Re:zero.

If you agree all those above ^^^ I was ll say SAO is a harem

First, I just wanna say I love clannad. After Story is a masterpiece. But the first season is definitely a harem (albeit a really low key one). They literally even include different routes as special episodes and the show is based on a VN where you can get with any of the main girls. That said, in SAO (which I also love) Asuna, Suguha and Lisbeth are all very much in love with kirito. And there are VERY strong arguments to be made that Sinon and Alice feel the same. That's 5 girls minimum so yeah, he's got a bit of a harem

The different routes are just like the Visual Novel, different Tomoyas with different choices and memories, so isn't the same Tomoya that loves all the girls, in each route he only love one girl. Clannad is not a harem, neither SAO or neither any VN adaptation with a main Heroine and a protagonist that only loves the main. And as i said, Asuna and Rika loves Kazuto, yes, and Suguha loved, but not anymore. Alice and Shino doesn't love him, i don't know why someone can even think that, is so nonsense.

The author knows how to pander its audience, and the main problem is if any other male character has any relationship progression or a potential one whith a female character that we actually see it gets killed or is completly forgotten.

I mean there's plenty of shows people think are trashy and yet they enjoy them. SAO falls in the same category for me. But yeah I do realise everyone online is a dick about it, but I'm just in it for fun. If I have a good time, I'm not against anything tbh.
Speaking of that, I'm also hype for the movie; the theme song and everything slaps.
