SirTristamSfan said: Does anyone know if the series is selling well in Japan and worldwide. ? If it is popular enough we might get a season after the second cour I did talk to an online jp friend of mine a week or two ago. He is a big Re:zero fan and has read the MT web novels. According, to him its really hard to gauge the success of a show as it is airing, as its only when the sales of the source material is released, do we get to know whether the anime had any impact. And that is what counts for producers and the studio. As for the online presence, yeah MT is definitely a success. Every episode trended on Twitter along with the ep of AOT. On NND, which is the biggest streaming platform for anime, it maintained rank no.1 throughout its run. (Obligatory reasons for why others didn't rank higher AOT: It airs on NHK, which is like BBC in UK. Its a free channel that is pre-installed on every TV. So, those who want to watch it, watch it on TV while airing or record it. JJK: Its a shounen show that is rebroadcast multiple times throughout the weekend, and teenagers who are the target audience usually watch on TV due to monetary reasons. ReZero: This season has anyway had a low viewership mostly because of lack of Rem, and for many casual viewers she is the biggest draw. According to my friend, a lot of people are just going to binge watch it after it ended due to the slow pace in the middle. Slime: Second seasons always have lower viewership compared to season 1's. However, it has been more popular than Re:zero on multiple platforms. This show has a more mixed fanbase, as in both genders like the show, and kids watch it as well. These are the big shows that aired this season. Suppose a Kid from the Last Dungeon Boonies moved to a starter town? also had a decent viewership online, mostly because people equate it to Konosuba, as full comedy.) On the JP forums, (again according to my friend, I dont read Japanese) rumors of merch production for MT being boosted due to increase in demand forecast have been spreading. That means the production committee believes that show has been a success and releasing more merch in the market assuming greater demand. Also, the light novels have also been sold out in some of the big chain bookstores for weeks now. Also, MT has a huge fanbase in Japan, even without the anime, so there is no reason for a lack of continuation, considering Studio Bind was created to have a conducive environment for long running adaptations. The single reason why Re:Zero took so long for the 2nd season is because White Fox wanted the same staff as Season 1 and arranging schedules of everyone who worked before is not easy. Hence, Studio Bind was created to make this process simpler, and book the schedules of key animators and directors in advance so that they don't face the same problem that One Punch Man and others faced. |
Nagatsuki Tappei (ReZero): It goes without saying that "Mushoku Tensei" is interesting, but first of all, it's amazing that you were able to depict the life of one character, Rudy. People say that "CLANNAD" is life, but for me, "Mushoku Tensei" is life |

If it is popular enough we might get a season after the second cour Stats and viewer globally it is shown to be successful. It did got cut off the Chinese market which is a lose in terms of profit but in the Japanese market where it matter the most it seem to be in top 5 across multiple streaming and rating platforms. The staff did mention MT probably receive the same treatment as SAO and dungeon which I just take it as a grain of salt since there’s no official confirmation yet. |

Correct me if I am wrong, but international popularity does not have a big influence on whether an anime gets a second season. That being said, the series is selling quite well. Based on some data I have found online: https://global.bookwalker.jp/genre/3806/best-selling-light-novels/ In terms of what Japan thinks of the anime, I have found this: https://www.anikore.jp/chronicle/2021/winter/ac:tv/ Anikore is pretty much Japan's MyAnimeList. |
I like dub more than sub because I am not a weeb. |

The exception is when the anime is funded by western companies (like that Crunchyroll shows) or aiming western audience (some shows that came to Netflix). MT is totally opposed to that, it is a series so popular in JP that was a classic reference to other isekai authors. The western world could all die (from a certain virus?) that other seasons of this show will still be confirmed. |

NicoNicoDouga, kinda like Japanese Youtube. The content over there is more targeted to anime, idols, vocaloids, etc, basically not normal youtube stuff. It was the biggest video platform between 2010-2018/19, however, now youtube has taken over Japan. As for anime, it was one of the early sites where you could watch anime legally apart from TV. They have a dedicated channel for anime which requires monthly subscription. Usually, all the seasonal anime's are up there. Since, this site has a more otaku target audience, the numbers an anime gets on this site also forecasts the merch sales and source material sales, one can expect. While other streaming sites also exist, anime-specific ones as well as Netflix and Hulu, NND is still the biggest in terms of anime watchers. |

I don't think Re:Zero has any worries. The reason it took so long for s2 was because, White Fox had difficulties arranging staff from the previous season into the same schedule. And Rem merch sales alone beats out any blu-ray sales and the like. I read somewhere, that the popularity of Rem really irritated the author, as his editor and publishing house pushed him to make Rem more important to the story. Anyways, the merch sales of Re:Zero is humongous and that alone can convince the production committee for the next season. |

MoonDragon72 said: It's popular because of the pedophilia shit. If it wasn't for that no one would care Wait so you are saying that the "pedophilia shit" is the main allure of the series? Are you insinuating that most anime fans that like the anime are into "pedophilia shit"? That is quite a bold statement since anime is topping the charts in Japan and worldwide. |

rdturbo you spread so much wrong information. NicoNico isn't the biggest anime site for years now. Mushoku is number one on Nico Nico, but it barely has 300k views per episode. And the only reason Mushoku is beating Re:Zero, Jujutsu, or Slime on NicoNico and other platforms posted here is because they are airing episodes with a 1-week delay on them, while Mushoku is airing the latest episode. Abema rankings posted above are wrong as well. You can go to the Abema site and check views per episode. Re:Zero is 500-800k views per episode, Jujutsu is 400-600k, Slime is 200-300k and Mushoku is 200-225k. Most of the stuff you actually say is wrong. Re:Zero season 2 didn't take four years because White Fox wanted the same staff, but there was no source material left to make it for almost two years, and then they were already doing the 2 OVA. This is false as well - the popularity of Rem really irritated the author, as his editor and publishing house pushed him to make Rem more important to the story. |

I'm not sure about NicoNico, but I checked the visits on the page called ABEMA. Episode 10 of Re: Zero S2 Part 2 garnered just over 400,000 views and "Turning Point 1" barely exceeded 250,000. I compared episode 6 of Re: Zero S2 Part 2 to the acclaimed episode 5 of Mushoku Tensei and the difference was more or less the same. Jujutsu Kaisen episodes 19 and 20 almost reached 400,000 and the last episodes of Isekai Slime barely exceeded 200,000 views. While creating a new account is suspicious, at least his words have some validity. When Re: Zero S1 ended there was practically nothing to adapt and the OVAS surely delayed plans even further. It also seems that the creator loves Emilia very much and is his favorite character, so there is a possibility that he is not very happy with the greater popularity of "the other". Although whether or not his editors urged him to make Rem more relevant is something I don't know. |

Re:Zero aired in 2016 and had the time to develop a fan base, while Mushoku Tensei aired this year in late January. |

Although whether or not his editors urged him to make Rem more relevant is something I don't know. I am not sure how ABEMA counts its view, but NicoNico, from what I have seen had two versions of the same ep. One that's broadcasted live and the other that's uploaded after the broadcast but it's paid. I am not sure if the live broadcast is paid or not. And in NicoNico, MT eps easily surpassed 300K view, the first ep crossed 600k, while some in the middle almost reached 500k. I don't know if views are combined from both or not. As for my explanations for why the other animes didn't rank higher, I was just putting out my own reasons in general and from what I have discussed with my friend. I wasn't specifically talking about NicoNico. And the rankings on Abema and others as well are not just based on views as far as I can see. Otherwise, some names on the list just don't make sense. Also, the views are really spread out across the streaming platforms unlike us in the west. Netflix and Hulu have simultaneous broadcast of most of the shows in Japan unlike here. As for whether NicoNico is the biggest or Abema is the biggest, it's debatable. I don't have all the knowledge about this, but Abema is generally known for late night broadcasts. Abema is still a new entrant in this sphere. I think its been 5 yrs or so since it was created and the anime channel started 3 or 4 yrs ago. Again, I am not sure. But NicoNico has comparable views to Abema atleast for shows that get a live broadcast, and the VOD's as well. NicoNico has been here for more than 10 yrs now. And as for Re:Zero, while there was no content left after season 1 just ended, but that issue was solved within 2 years. And this is like no secret or anything. The animators are pretty open with this stuff. Studios generally prefer that the same staff work over multiple seasons. The producer of railgun and index specifically mentioned this reason for the gaps between the seasons. Most of these studios hire freelancers for the heavy work, and freelancers usually have jampacked schedules. The whole reason Studio Bind was created was for creating an environment which is conducive for long running adaptations meaning making it easier to book the schedules of animators in advance. The director from Whitefox doesn't explicitly mention Re:Zero in his interview but it's easy to guess which show he was referring to as having scheduling problems for multiple seasons. The Rem part is just a rumor that I read somewhere way back and I mentioned that I read it somewhere in my earlier reply. Even my JP friend says that the Rem fandom in Japan is crazy. No other female character has as many merch as Rem except for maybe the Konosuba girls and the girls from children shows. |
