Just look at that score. Go to Anilist, anime-planet, any forum out there and you will see any of discussion about Naruto (that is not within the Naruto community): that Naruto is absolutely hated by most if not all anime fans. Many argue that the anime is overall mediocre and overrated, the characters annoying and shallow, the story predictable and contrived, and so on. I think it really says something when an anime like Sword Art Online, which is also subject to heaps of ridicule by most anime fans, has more favorites on MAL than Naruto. Naruto has only 2 merits: it was popular in its heyday and it made loads of money. Nowadays, ever since Shippuuden ended and Boruto began airing, discussion about Naruto has died but its legacy of being the shittiest and most painfully average anime remains. Looking back was all of the hate worth it? Has there been worse anime that have reached similar heights of popularity? I came here to open a discussion to hear today's anime community and their thoughts on the Naruto anime, manga, entire franchise and whether or not it is truly a stain on the history of the anime medium. All thoughts are, to be honest, and explored, perspectives are equal and please discuss civil-like whether you be a Naruto-hater or an (ever so rare) Naruto fan.

Great point brought up. The apparent love Naruto has for Sasuke does border on being gay and I do believe it did put off many homophobic viewers but Yuri on Ice did so well with a gay protagonist so I don't think the homosexual undertones in Naruto was a major factor in its inability to impress audiences.

I was a jerk who hated Naruto without watching in the 00's when I was in middle and high school. Especially in high school when the anime hit the states.

Being an Inuyasha fan, I was pretty set on defending my chosen shonen to the death. XD

It didn't help that they called Naruto "yaoi" when it absolutely wasn't. And I was a mature person who had already seen lots of porn. XD

Hot damn I was butthurt.

Flashfoward to me being an actual adult and not giving a shit about what fandom is bigger anymore like a dick measuring contest and being kinda a shut in, my old friend since elementary school asked me to cosplay Naruto because they felt I was super like Naruto.

"oh I haven't seen it, but I would be happy to."

Then I was kinda worried. Because honestly, I thought Naruto was supposed to be really stupid. And probably some Goku-protag I could never relate to really.

But Naruto is much deeper than Goku-clone. Least for me.

As someone who idenitfies heavily with Shinji, to be compared to a much more outgoing, special, friendly, but still lonely protag with no friends until later, really made me happy....

I always compare my friend who suggested that I am most like Naruto to be most like "Yugi" from Yugioh. Which should pretty much say how good of friends we are. And how sensitive and sweet, and kind, and not the kind of friend who would ever betray you at all but possibly has a dark side that they hide from most people, but I can see.

I donno, I think being compared to Naruto after I have seen a good chuck of the original and do vaguely know what happens at the end.... is such a huge complement... (I won most inspirational and spirited in school.... but, I never actually believed in myself the way Naruto does... but other people believe in me, that is for sure.) Outward perceptions of me feel so uncomfortable sometimes do to how I feel about myself.

But Naruto on the swing by himself is something I identify with...
But my friend sees me as a person who makes a lot of jokes, is determined, is outgoing, and tries their best. And maybe has a one track mind style interest level. XD

TL;DR-

I love Naruto, and I really don't know what you are talking about. I am fairly certain now that I have seen it, I am pretty sure other haters just didn't bother watching it, or just hate longer shows on a whole.

But I guess I am not most anime fans. I like Shinji Ikari after all.

Beautifully written and I agree immensely. I would ask myself what I was talking about too but research and talking with people over the years has kinda led to my conclusion that Naruto is hated by most others. Whether those who hate it are those who have watched it is yet to be seen (our good friend MutexFate hasn't seen Naruto according to their list). I identify heavily with Naruto and Shinji too and don't see why they are hated by a lot of people (Naruto less so because he is in the top 10 most favorited characters). I think we could get along great you want to be friends?

They messed big time with the last arc of the anime.

I love Naruto the most. I even read and write fanfiction... but I couldn't finish the anime. I dropped it during the last arc.

Well, there is obvious reason for both.

OP what are you even talking about ? Its Naruto for Christ sake, everyone knows it and probably most of the people like it. It's a battle shounen, those things can't be hated.

What reasons? I am probably one of the few people who read yaoi in full support of Naruto/Hinata. Sasuke is just the kind of prick I hate.

Is that... sarcasm? Battle shounen other than HxH, BnH, and One Piece are almost unanimously hated, not that I like that it is that way. Battle shounen are great!

I have no idea where these Naruto fans you are talking about are but I would love to meet them. Maybe I just have had a long string of bad luck at conventions, at school, and online because I just can't find anybody who really likes Naruto.

Those that hate on something always make alot more of noise vs those that dont hate it, you only need a few haters to have a commotion going on.

Battle shounen does have a huge fanbase I have met many people who like Naruto in conventions people just don't really say it out loud.

Naruto is a classic af. I'm talking about the good old Naruto. Atleast it's superior than Fairy Tail. Boruto can go fuck itself.

I think Fairy Tail is more hated, and it deserves all the hate.

It is ok to not like Naruto, because there are many reasons for it
but you can also like it even if there aren't that many reasons to do
I still like it, the only part i hate is just the entirety of shippuden which was a pretty big part
but i like the OG series and even the war arc of shippuden, Boruto ain't bad either (In my opinion)
it's ok to hate things that others like
but it's also ok to like things others hate

An anime fan hating an anime is really stupid, it's ok if you don't like one, but if you waste your time and tell the entire world that you hate it you are making fun of yourself.

Naruto has been beyond boring from the start and as an obnoxious and grating and really shallow character being put thru the exact same stuff thousands of times, there is nothing worse or better at it.

most people who watch mha just see it as something interesting not the next masterpiece that will become a classic or whatever.
I guess there are exeptions as mentioned before for example: kids who just found out japan existed or whatever, but most people who've watched lots of anime see it like that(at least from what I've seen).
but whatdya mean"I try to warn those people" it's not like by watching animes something terrible is gonna happen(exept loose your social life) rigth?

Naruto is really popular.

If you want to talk about hated anime, then try Fairy Tail, Sword Art Online and Black Clover.

Black Clover is definitely unanimously hated. SAO and Fairy Tail, on the other hand, seem to have a larger share of love from the anime community than Naruto nowadays, not that they aren't also hated. Frozen is also popular, that doesn't mean that it isn't also hated by a lot of people in the Disney fanbase.

Pre-timeskip and Early Shippudden are not hated. The Ninja War Is disliked by most people but no to the point of making it the Most Hated Anime. I Would say that title goes to SAO or if we are talking about just Shonen shows then I think it would be Fairy Tail Or Black Clover.
