I've recently started gotten really interested in chess, having really fun playing it with grandpa while he's over. And so I wondered if there's any anime wherein there's chess being played. ;D

Preferably something like Hikaru's Go but with chess, but anything goes really. I really don't expect there to be anything lol

The only one is know of is Shion no Ou (yes, it's a pun on Hikaru no Go) about a young girl who aspires to become a professional Shougi player. Shougi is a Japanese variant of chess with some unique rules like the ability to return pieces to the board in certain situations. The pieces have the usual names like kings, knights, and pawns, but the play is distinctly different. As in Hikaru, there are occasional efforts to explain the significance of moves, but also like in Hikaru they aren't really sufficient to understand the play of the game.

Chihayafuru is another compelling story based on a game. This one is a unique Japanese card game called karuta that requires not only mental abilities but strong eye/hand coordination and acute hearing as well. The story revolves around the beautiful Chihaya and the team she recruits from her high school. Some inklings of romance with two male childhood friends, but Chihaya herself is clueless about most anything other than karuta.

Closest I can think of is Highschool DxD. Chess isn't literal; it's a metaphor for the divisions of the demonic powers.

In umineko they do talk about chess very often and there is a "game" going on. But it is not chess. (if you liked higurashi i would recommend it)

Chess isn't fun for people who don't play it (unlike other sports where you don't really have to get what's going on to feel the competitive vibe). And even if there was an anime about chess what elo would it target? I'm around 1300 elo, wouldn't like to watch people with 800 '1.f3 e6 2.g4!!' and wouldn't understand most of the choices from the masters. Blitz chess is so soulless, standard would take to long, etc.

Still i think it would be a nice idea. It just wouldn't sell much.

Well they are anime about Go, ping pong and rock paper scissor, making an anime about chess doesn't really sound that strange to me.

Shion does spend time talking about specific moves, as does Hikaru no Go. The latter is amazing in the amount of drama it brings to a board game. Shion comes close.
