THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.

The movie that Yumi's parents go to see in the flashback is Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, which was released in Japan in 1970.

It's actually pretty impressive that the episode dedicated such a large portion of it's runtime to a flashback of her parent's first date.

This is a show that cares about its characters. :)

So, now the father suddenly can't cook anymore (mistaking salt for sugar), but a last episode he was able to cook a bunch of chinese dishes?
And if they have a phone in their kitchen, why didn't the mother use it?

And Kyoheis "jealousy strategy" sounds stupid.

The husband or wife of a married couple with child "dates" another woman/man.

What would the partner think?

a) Oh, I am jealous of that woman/man, I have to make up with my husband/wife.

b) My husband/wife is cheating on me and seeing someone else.

That Kyohei guy should be old enough to realise that b) is a possibility and that it could damage their relationship even further, maybe even ruin the entire family.

But after seeing how easily both the mother and the father got swept away by total strangers, they both should see a marriage counselor and work on their relationship.

The wife was clearly in the wrong for leaving a pot on the stove unattended. She could've burned the entire house down. Though the guy shouldn't have thrown a tree at her either.
Also wasn't aware even Japan was infested with hippies back in the day.

Maybe flawed, but I found it fun and kinda original to see a marital quarrel in a Japanese cartoon for a change.
And I liked the sweet resolution, which has a nostalgic note.
