I decided that since Kousuke is such a realistic character with a lot of psychological depth, we could talk about his mind and his strategy games.

Well, to start, lets talk about the card games.

Do you think he often uses these games? We know that he's used it before with Kiyotaka, and the ease of which he used the other one with Hiyono suggests he had used that one before as well, but do you think this is something he commonly implements?

To me, it seems perfectly in character for him to use cards as a common way of reading people. He shows in Spiral that he uses them as a judge of character, so he's obviously inept; my guess is he doesn't -need- the cards to do what he does, but it's a practical and simple medium to use.

My guess is he's got a set of typical card games [like the ones used with Kiyotaka and Hiyono] that he can implement in a hurry, but he can probably create a card challenge revolving around a specific person's psyche if need be.

I agree. Plus, I didn't think about this before, but if you remember, after Ayumu questioned Kousuke's quick answer change with Hiyono's game, he said something along the lines of, "Though one answer change is usually my limit, how do you explain..."

This is an obvious indicator that this is a normal occurrence, to the point where he even has rules for himself.

But, then let's look at the opposite side of the coin. Since this is a common tool he uses, it brings up the question, why cards? We know he doesn't need them, and that he uses them as a simple medium, but what made him use cards instead of, say, different colored markers? (I know, ridiculous, but you get the point ^-^)

(This has to all be speculation, since there is no canonical evidence. But, being Kousuke fans, keeping his personality and traits in mind might help come up with a good guess.)

Ah, that's right. I actually rewatched that episode not too long ago and my brain circled it in big red marker.

My guess there is some sort of psychological or past connection with them. Maybe there was an occurance in his past that, directly or indirectly influenced an interest in playing cards. Maybe it was found by accident; he tries to do a magic trick or somesuch, ends up failing the actual trick, but finding out the card anyway but analyzing the person.

Who knows, maybe he even tried various mediums before settling on the cards.

I'm sure I can come up with some better stuff than that, but it's getting late here aha *brian is fried*

I want a mental red marker....

Anyway, the idea of some sort of psychological connection with Kousuke and the cards interests me. Maybe even an emotional one. Kousuke is, though it doesn't seem like it, a pretty closed up individual. He rarely show his true emotions, and he hides behind aggression and cucumberness. At least in my opinion. But most of the Blade Children are like that. Extremely troubled, when everything boils down.

Perhaps the cards represent something in his past as a member of the Blade Children. In fact, perhaps Kiyotaka reveled them to him. And yes, Kousuke was the one that played the card game with Kiyotaka, but couldn't that have been a friendly showing of improved ability with them? Everyone seems to think that Kiyotaka and Kousuke were happy rivals, but I tend to get the feeling of an older-younger brother relationship. The way Kousuke says the name Kiyotaka sometimes even suggests reverence or respect, and sometimes even worry from my point of view.
