Wanted to start a discussion on comparing the two applications (this is not a "which is greater" discussion. I am curious to see what MALers use.) What sparked my interest was a blog posting by Taka [http://www.takafansubs.com/index.php?p=news&id=226]
Sounds like JMM is pretty fantastic. For those using it please tell me! :)
My current Setup:
I use Zoomplayer [http://www.inmatrix.com/files/zoomplayer_download.shtml] as my primary player. It has handled everything I have every thrown at it with the codecs it recommends during install (CCCP before that). I have it installed on all of my desktops (2) and laptops (2) along with MALUpdater. It also has Blu Ray support which is nice for Anime I have purchased, when/if available (my desktop has two for JP and US regions). For the most part my Cruncyroll account takes care of what I cannot buy or just wish to watch and fansubs for anything else (/plug please support the industry where/when you can).
Being a .Net Programmer and having an MSDN account I use my Windows Server 2008 R2 to handle central storage of my anime (up to 3TB). This way I can view from any device anywhere anytime. Plus Using VMWare ESXi I have a virtualized server with a MS SQL Server 2012 running (this being a pro for JMM since I can then do queries).
Why consider a change?
MALUpdater has for the most part covered my anime watching needs with a few cavets [I am still on the fence to see if the ends justify the means with changing from what I have].
The complexity is the sum of it's simple parts:
It doesn't really help with keeping up with manga I read. I would like more automation over this(naturally I can understand the gravity of what I am asking hehe). I update every now and again manually in batches. I would defintely say most of my reading falls to the way side which is onething I wish I could recall more obscure things I have read when recommending to friends/family.
Cruncyroll Yearly Subcriber handles some of my watching (this extra venue somewhat cripples MALUpdater since it makes me pick on video player or streaming, it needs a hybrid mode [anyone have advice on this within MALUpdater please share your knowledge! ;)])
Zoomplayer covers DVD, Blu-Ray, and individual files. <- ZP also has features which make Play Next/Prev functionality superior/inferior to MALUpdater depending on the scenario [neither pro or con to either app really]
MyAnimeList tracks my history (best damn feature in the world for me). Since JMM claims support for MAL that is a pro for change. It doesn't always parse the filename correctly and therefore update my entries. That is a daunting task in and of itself so I will take the time to appluad MALUpdater's pretty stellar handling since it nails the vast majority. If I am not actively looking I tend to find my entries very out of sync. =/ bummer.
uTorrent for downloading content I can't buy (yet) or stream from Cruncyroll. This has been configured for central storage of all finished download files but it is ignorant of the meaning of those files. This also maybe made more complex on my part since I use BTGuard for bypassing ISP throttles [/small rant with my profession we do use torrents for distrubuting development backups of MS Sql Server between our offices throughout the US; the files range from 1GB to 15GB and they are growing! I hate ISP's wet blank approach of throttling ALL torrent traffic since they cannot descern the file's intention, nor should they. Bastages >_< /end rant]. For a small fee BTGuard has wonderfully taken care of two problems since all traffic is resent via 443 with encryption and proxied to world wide servers, nice. :) This may have introduced a small configuration problem when I use the uTorrent plugin since BTGaurd has specific install requirements which I rather not mess with. I would love feedback on anyone that has this type of setup as well as this may solve a cavet above and may diminish a change to JMM.
File/Folder storage plays a big part in this equation. I do my best to keep the files intact but as fansubbers come and go or the need to store the anime as a file/folder changes with purchasing or just leaving it up to Crunyroll. One thing I wish I could do is trim off checksum blocks at the end of show (if the name is long or complex). Another gotchya is shows with puncuation that NTFS doesn't allow [programmer viewpoint: damn it Microsoft...]. Sometimes I wish I could input my own filename alias or naming convention [like mp3 tag applications ;)]
Please note this may be an end user error :o admittedly.
This is where the discussion comes in. Would JMM better handle the cavets above? Would the time/effort of changing the existing mechanism be worth it [subjective I know, but please share]? Tell me your setup/config and share your thoughts :)
/note I am also not against modifying code of MALUpdater or getting my hands dirty. I have wondered to myself if I have made some of these problems by not fully understanding some of the applications options so I am open to changing things. |
