So, Naruto was as lonely as Gaara up until Chapter 1, as his monologue indicates. Iruka's acknowledgment made him feel less lonely and somewhat validated, which I believe happened quite recently. I don't recall the exact timeframe between Chapter 1 and now, but it should be within a year, considering that the Land of Waves arc likely took several months, especially since the bridge was completed when they left that arc.
