Which is real?
| Is it tea? Is it pretty-coloured water? Is it (as my dad says) fit only for swirling down the drain? I know which side I'm on - herbal/fruit tea all the way - but then again I am a Guardian-reading leftie so it's only to be expected. |

Masala chai (Hindi (मसाला चाय [masālā chāy], "spiced tea") is a beverage from the Indian subcontinent made by brewing tea with a mixture of aromatic Indian spices and herbs. By itself, chai is merely the generic word for tea in Iran, India and much of the world, but for many English speakers, "chai" is always construed as "masala chai". I think it's fairly common in the US. Or maybe my family is just weird and we drink a lot of it :x |

| Well, technically, herbal and fruit teas aren't teas because they literally don't come from the tea plant! Being "real" has nothing to do with it. But I think the word "tea" for beverage has drifted apart in meaning from the word "tea" as the name of the plant over the years. When I call something "tea" I mean "herbal infusion" which includes infusing water with the tea plant or any other plant. So I voted that if you pour hot water over it, it's tea. :P |
