My passion for Jazz music has been reignited since watching Sakamichi no Apollon (and made me listen to Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers' Moanin') !!

This topic is for you guys and gals to recommend and share your favourite Jazz artists and/or songs from any era.

So post your favourite Jazz artists and/or songs which you recommend listening to (and its sub-genre if possible)!

OH, and to start off I recommend: "Giant Steps" by John Coltrane (tenor saxophonist). here's a link- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30FTr6G53VU

ps: Sakamichi no Apollon is the SHIT!! (pardon my language)

Well, Ella, Louis and Billie stay da shit in my heart, but I also enjoy very much to listen to: Esbjörn Svensson Trio, Jamie Cullum, Matthew Herbert Big Band.

Also, listening to Pink Martini makes me feel sexy. :)

Oh and Claude Nougaro... A French singer, huge fan of jazz, was a marvel to me. I miss him.

Before I watched the first episode I was wondering if they'd be playing original tunes or jazz standards, and now I'm wondering what other jazz standards they'll (hopefully) be playing.

Here's another Art Blakey performance of a classic Duke Ellington number:

Hopefully the protagonist listens to some Keith Jarrett sometime in the show.

Jarrett, Coltrane, Ayler, Brotzmann, Mingus, Dolphy, Komeda, and Kaoru Abe are all terrific jazz artists.

Oh man. This show surprised me so much. I didn't read the summary to it; just watched it since it was getting lots of hype.

When the jazz kicked in... I fell in love with this show!~

Okay -- here are some of my recs.

I LOVE Jazz Fusion. It's one of my favorite genres. Fusion (if you don't know) is the blending of Rock and Jazz into one amazing genre. It's upbeat Jazz with rock influences basically.

The masters of Jazz fusion include but are not limited to: Dennis Chambers (amazing drummer), Greg Howe (great guitarist), Victor Wooten (... this man plays a bass almost better than most guitarists can play guitar). Also check of Bireli Lagrene. Fantastic guitarist.

Here are some fusion songs you may like (particularly if you liked JUST the drumming or even the songs in the background):

I love this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSH28tEk0q8
The drumming is amazing here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15Qw9TwJOEM
And here's some organ/sax play for ya: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-a7xUeurLcE

I go on for ages rec'ing some Jazz.. I love this stuff.

Since most of you seem to know the usual suspects, I'll post a band that's pretty damn eclectic.

I present to you, ladies and gentlethings, Bohren & Der Club Of Gore.

Say hello to The Devil's lounge act.

By the way, I haven't even watched the first episode yet and I already know this show's gonna be great. It doesn't get better than Watanabe + Kanno.

I'm not familiar with Jazz but there's a band called BadBadNotGood that makes instrumental music that's a mix between Hip Hop and Jazz. Their newest album only just came out, and I think it's worth a listen.

I can't believe there's not only an anime about jazz but you awesome people are actually discussing jazz in a thread. what's more, most of you listen to some of the greatest musicians this music has to offer.

I have been a jazz pianist for almost 20 years. I've played with guys like Joe Lovano, Billy Drewes, Dan Wall, Ed Schuller, Sean Jones, Jamey Haddad, Joe Locke, and too many more great players to name. (I even played one concert with the late great Louis Bellson!)

Like a lot of cats before me, I live and die by the music and I can safely say that I take jazz as seriously as anyone on MAL and would be delighted to discuss jazz-related topics or make individual recommendations to anyone.

There are a couple short tracks on my old MySpace page for the skeptics or those who just like hearing new music.

I think everyone in this thread is awesome and hope to make some new friends. :)

Ah yeah, not many people have heard of them. I say this not because I'm a hipster with horn-rimmed glasses, but because they're criminally obscure. They need some much-deserved recognition.

Personally, Bohren exemplify the kinda jazz I've been looking for all my life.

Similar to what someone else posted, I love Jazz but I haven't been exposed to the big names and stuff so I only know what I have been randomly exposed to.
I stumbled across this John Zorn character whose music is awesome! His style is all over the place but a lot of his music mixes jazz with klezmar(Jewish) music and the result is amazing.

It's a very small yet fairly accurate example of what I do. I also play fusion (I think there is one track from a fusion album I did up there), Brasilian music (mostly samba and bossa nova), Argentine tango, salsa, and other things, but this thread is about JAZZ, which is my first love. Thanks for taking the time to listen. :)

This thread started out with some great recommendations, but it has really strayed from real jazz. It's good that people like to listen to lots of different things and I would never discourage that, but jazz is a national treasure and it is nothing less than sacred to me. I think it's in the music's best interest that we don't give inexperienced listeners the wrong idea. It would be good if people continued to post real jazz like Trane, Miles, Jarrett, etc. and refrained from posting stuff like Kilimanjaro and Bohren which, while jazz-influenced, is not really jazz.

I hope no one takes this the wrong way. I've come to expect a lot less interest/appreciation for jazz from an American audience than I do from a Japanese or European audience so it's not surprising that a lot of recommendations are missing the mark a bit, but I was really impressed to see people posting Trane and Keith Jarrett and I hope that others will listen to real unadulterated jazz and perhaps find something in the music that speaks to them personally. Like a lot of musicians before me, I live and die by this music and it's the only acceptable justification for my existence. It has enriched my life like nothing else and I hope other people can have a similar experience.

A lot of great recommendations in this thread, both old and new. Here are a few recommendations of more recent jazz:

Legendary bassist Dave Holland, with Nate Smith (drums), Robin Eubanks (trombone), Chris Potter (sax), Steve Nelson (vibraphone/marimba)

A HD video of one of my favourite big band tracks, Alan Ferber's "The Compass":
http://vimeo.com/23408915

"Bye Bye Bees" from the album "Tiny Resistors" is less traditionally jazz, but in my opinion the album is one of the best to come out in recent years.

And of course, being Norwegian, I can't avoid recommending this. Jaga Jazzist playing their "Tocatta" in a church.

Dunno if anyone's mentioned him yet, but Brad Mehldau is a phenomenal jazz pianist. I'd go so far as to call him the second coming of Bill Evans. He's probably best known for playing some kickass Radiohead covers, as well as some other alt-rock classics, but he knows his standards, too. I'm mostly going to post some of his rock covers, though, since I'm always amazed at how awesome his reinterpretations of these familiar tunes are. A lot of them involve some pretty crazy chord substitutions, but not always.

Here's "Knives Out," originally by Radiohead:

Here's one of his recordings of "Paranoid Android," also by Radiohead (the version on his album Largo is great, too):

Here's his incredible cover of "Wonderwall" by Oasis, turning a song that's pretty much a cliche these days into a sweet jazz-funk number:

Here's him and Joshua Redman doing Nirvana's "Lithium":

And to change things up a bit, I'll post him playing "My Favorite Things":

And finally, here's him doing one of the all-time classic standards, "All The Things You Are" (the duo version he did with Pat Metheny is great, too):

Being a Radiohead fan, I came across Brad Mehldau a while ago and he is awesome.

Oscar Peterson is a pianist born in Montreal (yay), he was called the "Maharaja of the keyboard'' by Duke Ellington.

Here's an incredible performance :

Different type of jazz though.

The strange thing about Mehldau is that I got into him via the albums he did with Pat Metheny, so when I finally started checking out his other stuff, I was like "Holy shit, Radiohead covers!" I know a ton of people first hear about him because of those covers, though. I've certainly turned a bunch of people onto him with them.

I love Medeski, Martin and Wood! Have you heard any of their stuff with John Scofield? A Go Go has them as his backing band, essentially, but Out Louder was released as Medeski, Scofield, Martin and Wood, and it shows, since the album is considerably more avant-garde. Although still very funky. That's one thing I love about MMW: the fact that they're really out there harmonically but still play stuff with a great groove. I love weird time signatures and jerky rhythms as well, but a good groove is a good groove.

And I had no idea Oscar Peterson was Quebecois. That's really interesting; I'm reading Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace right now, and Quebec is fairly important to the plot of it, particularly Quebecois independence movements. Oscar Peterson was definitely one of the greatest jazz pianists ever in terms of sheer technical skill; the only person to really top him in that department was the unbelievable Art Tatum, who managed to get the jazz nickname "God" as a result of his jaw-dropping performances. Not only was he extremely technical; he was fairly far ahead of his time in terms of improvisation and harmony as well. His piano style was heavily informed by the stride piano style exemplified by guys like Fats Waller, which in itself was a pretty flashy and virtuosic style of jazz piano, but Art Tatum took it several levels beyond that, introducing classical-inspired flourishes and cadenzas to his solo piano performances, as well as extended chords and dissonant harmonies that would later be further developed by the first bebop musicians.

The man really has to be heard to be believed; it's impossible to describe how incredible he was using mere words.
