I hate this anime. I really do. That's why I almost never talk about it. However this time I'm not talking how much I hated it but rather to talk on how this show ever got more than 46,000 viewers in MAL. Probably many times more if I count Anime-Planet and Anime News Network. Get ready to be surprised to see this show actually had more viewership than most other "popular" shows out there.

"Better" anime that had less viewership(95% of these shows are actually had better qualities and much higher budgets than SD):

1. Gundam 00(30260)
2. Gundam 00 Second Season(23080)
3. Gundam Seed(26233)
4. Gundam Seed Destiny(19270)
5. Ranma 1/2(18555)
6. Gundam Wing(23675)
7. Gundam Wing Endless Waltz(8512)
8. Mawaru Penguindrum(12217)
9. Hanasaku Iroha(16697)
10. Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica(36629)
11. Legend of the Galactic Heroes(4927)
12. Hokuto no Ken(3593)
13. Berserk(1997)(29612)
14. Kimi ga Nozomu Eien(24904)
15. ef - a tale of memories(29859)
16. ef - a tale of melodies(18027)
17. Yosuga no Sora(17817)
18. Star Driver: Kagayaki no Takuto(11544)
19. True Tears(25499)
20. Each Minami-ke series failed to make 30,000 marks
21. If you combined all of You're Under Arrest series, it still failed to pass 20,000 marks, let alone surpassing School Days.

Other "popular" shows that actually surpassed School Days, in term of viewership that is:

1. Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch(117014)
2. Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch R2(98607)
3. Both seasons of K-On!
4. Both seasons of Clannad
5. High School of the Dead(58697)
6. Bakemonogatari(49990)
7. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann(74696)
8. Lucky ☆ Star(64613)
9. Both Fullmetal Alchemist series

Did I missed something up there? Well then you have it. It proves that people saw School Days for lulz than anything else. Only few of them actually take it seriously.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes just a merely speck of dust in comparison to School Day's viewership. Clearly WTF indeed.

It's probably due to the shocking ending that made the world go wtf.
But to be perfectly honest, all the hate driven towards this show is unjustified; this show entertained me from start to finish.

I also surprised with that too but my biggest surprise that Gundam 00 had lower viewership than SD despite having astronomical budget, considering it is Sunrise's flagship show in 2007. More importantly it was shown RIGHT AFTER School Days ended. Even that didn't help it much. Another explanation is more people are more interested at Clannad in that time, considering it had four different English fansub teams worked on it.

It's a love/hate anime. That pretty much explains the interest towards it and why people view it. Add to it that the series is quite short and easily accessible, and the comments about the ending that will make it look curious for many.

I am missing how that conclusion was reached from lists of "better" and "popular" anime. The information only supports that the "better" anime have higher average scores and the the "popular" anime you picked have higher viewership, none of that can be used to establish the motive of the majority who watched School Days.

95% of these shows are actually had better qualities and much higher budgets than SD

95% of those shows would be 20(rounded up) out of the 21. I don't believe you know the budget of those shows and you claim to be 20 of them had higher budgets than School Days.

@Anime_Name:
It doesn't take a genius to figure out Gundam 00 and Gundam Seed's budgets are many times higher than School Days, not to mention they were carefully planned too, budget wise.

By the way the School Days' case, the director and script writers intend to save the show from even more sucking by making it worse as possible. For some reasons it worked. They knew the "Nice Boat" thing will be a massive phenomenon. The only reason people ignores the higher-budget shows that I mentioned because there are no memes can be associated with them.

Popularity =/= Quality

PS: LotGH's low viewership can be explained that its fanboys(and fangirls) are scaring any potential newer fans.

As I said for 95% of those to have better budget then School Days you would need 20 out of the 21, not just 00 or Seed. My point is you can't argue cost or budget of School Days and 21 other anime without knowing costs and budgets of those shows.

Your conclusion to all that random nonsense was, "It proves that people saw School Days for lulz than anything else. Only few of them actually take it seriously." More people watching School Days than Yosuga no Sora or Rumbling Hearts doesn't prove most people watched SD for the lulz. You are taking a two facts, viewership and rating on MAL, and reaching impossible conclusions.

By the way the School Days' case, the director and script writers intend to save the show from even more sucking by making it worse as possible.

Their intention was to make a story that follows a 'bad' route and give the anime a unique 'bad" ending that wasn't in the VN of PS game. My use of bad has nothing to do with the amount of quality or effort it took to make the anime.

They knew the "Nice Boat" thing will be a massive phenomenon.

They didn't know any such thing because that meme was spawned from the TV broadcaster's ODD decision to air a tour of Japan video instead of the final episode. The people who made School Days had nothing to do with it.

The only reason people ignores the higher-budget shows that I mentioned because there are no memes can be associated with them.

Why don't you pay more attention to the shows you've picked. A reason why Ranma, Gundam Wing, LoGH,Hokuto no Ken, Berserk, and You're Under Arrest possibly have lower viewership here on MAL is because they are old shows and MAL ratings/views tend to favor shows that were made after this website opened up. That is just a general reason to explain the lack of viewship for older shows, it is not the only reason.

Memes are a product of popularity. Not the other way around.

To both NK_500 and Anime_Name, School Days is nothing but a spoof and parody of classic harem shows like Love Hina and any other similar shows. Nobody should take it seriously.

And of course, popularity doesn't equals quality, stop this stupid arguments right now.

Then why isn't SD called that by places that categorize anime and eroge?
SD is a dark romance, drama, tradegy similar to White Album and Rumbling Hearts, both of which were done very seriously. The content of the show was not done for comedy or an attempt at parody of any classic. Even if you found it funny or laughed that things doesn't make it appropriate or mean those things were intended to be laughed off. Don't give me that nobody bullshit because speak for everyone.

And of course, popularity doesn't equals quality, stop this stupid arguments right now.

So you want to stop one argument and start another.
