I started some lessons as soon I turned 18 (the legal driving age here). But the theorical classes about traffic rules are the most boring thing ever created in the universe and when I started real driving lessons all I did was to run over innocent people and other cars. Scary.

So I quit.

And I don't intend to try again in this life.

I don't drive and I don't have a driver's license, I do something that's even cooler that helps out the environment.

It's called walking with my own 2 feet everywhere and also riding my bike.

Well, I do have my apprentice for still about 6-8 months, don't know exactly how much time I have left. I can't drive alone until then...

And I'm 21 years old! I got it a little late when we consider I could have passed my exam at 16 years old!

Oh and yeah, I don't plan to get a char for at least 1 or 2 years...

I think a license should be necessarily only if:
1. You really don't have any other choice of transportation (esp to work).
2. You have enough money to pay for the gas, insurance, and car (with or without help).

I'm getting my license whenever I hit the age (16 here), though, because my school is a long drive away and besides the bus, my mom drives me, and she hates doing that, so she WANTS me to get a license. Plus, I have a job & she hates driving me. Lmao.

But if my school were closer & I didn't have a job, I wouldn't care for a car, except to hang out with friends, but I could always carpool. :D I love having older friends who have cars.

It's good for ID too.

I grew up in the country so I've been driving trucks/tractors since I was 11 or 12, though not on the roads and stuff mostly through pastures. Got my farmers permit at 13 and haven't stopped driving on the roads since. I personally think its a good idea to get one as you never know when your going to need it, but in your case it seems you maybe able to wait a few years tell you are better able to afford it.

Pwnography said:
Just went to the local driving school and booked everything I need (20 lessons and the tests). It was quite expensive, about 1500$, but its a one time thing that you have for the rest of your life and Im quite a petrolhead so for me it was an easy choice.

holy crap thats a lot of money for driving lessons, I'm so glad I grew up in the country where my driving lessons were free and consisted of my grandpa one day in the middle of a thunderstorm stopping the truck at the star of a muddy dirt road getting out walking over to the passenger side of the truck opening the door and telling me to scoot over and drive.

I actually got to drive in all kinds of conditions with him, rain/mud/snow/ice and all the while he would calmly explain how the car/truck would react in different situations and how I was supposed to react to them.

Sad thing is I'm going to guess that even though you pay all that money for those classes I'm betting they don't teach you how to drive in all types of conditions.

hum seems I got out of hand with my posting again. :P

When my friend first went to college she didn't have a car. The only reason she didn't "forget" how to drive when she went back home was because she lived with friends and they let her borrow her car. So in that way she did as what Asrialys said. I didn't drive for eight months (being away at college and all) but now I have a car and for the first few times driving I was pretty nervous. It took some time getting used to driving again.

I'm also less dependent on rides, which I like. I feel awkward asking for rides mainly because I live 15 minutes the opposite direction from the rest of my friends.

I have one but cbb upgrading to a provisional licence (which lets me drive w/out somebody beside me supervising >__>) yet because public transport here is THE BOMB and no i'm not paying for my own gas - all my monies goes into animu anyway...

I'll have to upgrade sooner or later before it expires, next year though - so plenty of time until then.

While i do have the (sickening amount of) cash required to get the license, I certainly neither have the cash for a car and certainly not for the fuel and all the road taxes and whatnot. Besides, As a student living within Bergen's city core, I certainly don't need one. And there's buses everywhere.

Nah, my 4x4/camping truck is a K5 Blazer. A huge truck with loads of space and I can only fit one other person in it with me due to the sheer amount of general camping and outdoor sports equipment I have.

I took my permit (license that allows you to drive with supervision) test when I was 17, but didn't feel like filling in the 50 hours required to get a license [under 18] in Nevada. I moved away after turning 18 and the university I went to was in walking distance from my apartment (I carpooled for groceries). Transferred back home recently and ended up retaking the permit test, practicing for four days then passing my driver's exam.

I haven't driven since. It's not to say that I haven't gone out though, just that its so much cheaper to carpool right now.

Got mine exactly one year ago =) In October 2007, 5 months after I turned 18…yeah, I was too lazy to finish quickly xD And afterwards I was too afraid to drive alone, so I´ve been driving regulary only since the beginning of this year, when I got my own car. Now I wouldn’t want to miss my beloved green (<3) Kia, since I need it to drive to school every day ^^

Have license, but no car.

If you're anything like me, you'd probably want one as soon as possible. I catch buses to work but the fees for that stack up pretty heavily ($6 total per day, 5 days a week) and I have to leave two hours early to even get there on time, where if I had a car, it'd be a simple 20-25 minute drive. Wasting 4+ hours per day on a commute = not nice.

Saving up for one now though :\

I can drive and could get my driver's license, but then I'd have to pay insurance which would be a total waste of money for me. Unless I'm going somewhere >10 miles away, a bike works just fine. $200 before gas and repairs per month just to get places in half the time (I hardly ever go anywhere anyway), is just a total waste to me.
