So, I'm watching Golgo 13 these days, and I'm shedding manly tears for the awesome badass-ery of Duke Togo. (Many thanks to lisnoire for that!) This is exactly my kind of character! But I can't help but wonder now... Have I reached a deadend again? Does it get any further than Golgo 13 or is he the ultimate GAR character? So I would like to know of any anime, in which the main lead is anywhere near just as GAR as Duke Togo. Here's a list of characters of the level GARness besides Duke. 1. Alucard 2. Guts 3. Kenshiro 4. Afro Samurai Here's a list of characters that I don't consider to be GAR enough. 1. Kamina 2. Archer 3. Shizuo Heiwajima 4. Dante 5. Vino 6. Roy Mustang To describe them better... They must be the main character of their series, they must be male (female is ok too at certain cases e.g. Motoko Kusanagi from GitS and Saya from BtLV), must not be goofy, klutz, emo or whinny (that's very important), and ofcourse prone to kick ass whenever the situation for it arises. Necesserily so, he must not have any moral blocks either. Just do whatever is necessery to get the job done, like Duke Togo. If they follow any kind of moral codes such as "Thou shalt no kill" they are automatically rejected. No moral blocks also includes that he should not allow others to slow him down, and not take shit from anyone. Optional rule: Not to be accompanied by a ragtag of moetard girls and crybaby whinny shounens. |

JJBA has multiple parts. Each part features a different "jojo", but they're all in the family. The anime adapts part 3. Part 3 introduces "stands" which are sorta like personas. The first one starts pretty wussy but gets pretty manly by the end of it. The second is snarky and a braggart, but he lives up to his words. Usually people's favorite. The third is a "delinquent" type. He's the MC of the anime. He's pretty badass and doesn't take shit. The fourth is semi-delinquent. He's probably the most moral faggot-y of them, as people he beats usually join him instead of dying. The fifth is a new gangster who wants to be a boss. He's the son of the antagonist in earlier parts. The sixth is a girl, but she's actually pretty manly herself. The daughter of part 3's MC. After part six, the timeline gets weird. All of the "Jojos" are badass, though some take time to develop while others are badass the entire time. The anime changes events in the manga and cuts out a lot. |

Eh... Confusing. Who are Jotaro and Joseph Joestar anyway? Used to be fighting those in some Capcom fighting games, way back. And more importantly, do any of these fellows compare to Guts, Alucard, Golgo, Afro and Kenshiro? This is what everyone should consider first before making a suggestion. Anyway, the ratings MAL gives the Jojo anime, aren't bad at all. So I might as well be checking it out. |

It's true they're at least 7.X, but almost all the manga scores are a full point above. When it only goes from 1-10 and it's averaged out by so many people that's a big deal. Joseph is the MC of part 2, but he's young in that. Joseph shows up as a mentor type in part 3 but he's older. Jotaro is the MC of part 3. And yes, JJBA is often compared to Fist of the North Star, but more "fabulous". |

If I rate something with 7 means that I enjoyed it. Good after all means good. Anyway, that "fabulous" sounds sneakily fagly... Explain please! :P |

And if anything, Dio, the main antagonist of most of the series, and at least somewhat related to every part, is pretty badass. And an asshole at that. He has ambition and he won't stop at anything to get what he wants. He's also somewhat an anti-hero and a villain in part 7. And no, Kamina is nothing like Jojos. If you've seen a cover of a tank/chapter of Bleach, you have an idea of Araki's fashion sense. Though Bleach is in no way anywhere near JJBA's level. |

You know, bringing Bleach into this was not a very good idea... Anyway, Dio Brando is one of the most (in)famous antagonists in the world of anime, and ofcourse at some point I will have to check out the anime he appears in. No way that I am gonna miss on him, in the long run. Good to know that the JoJo characters are nothing like Kamina. This character and TTGL in general, epitomizes exactly what I don't want to see as a recommendation here. |

Forgive my stupidity Try Rurouni Kenshin, I mean the main character isn't a hulk, but he meets quite a few of them and destroys them elegantly. |

I might be mistaken but I think I read somewhere that he refuses to kill others? EDIT: Indeed, it says so in his character profile too. Definitely not the kind of character I'm looking for. But Rurouni Kenshin is an anime that I'm gonna watch regardless, at some time. Now I just wanna know if there's another mean badass motherfucker out there that I might have missed. |

Ah. I am confused now. If the T&B is set in his past, then isn't that a prequel? Anyway, I still don't think that Kenshin Himura can be viewed in the same light as Alucard, Guts, Afro, Kenshiro and Duke Togo. Is not just a matter of physique but attitude as well. Just by looking at his character portrait one can tell that he's not as umm... serious business, as these guys are. The other guy, Hiko Seijuro? He's just supporting. I want a main character. |

It would be better to see Kenshin TV first as you'll understand him better and see just how contrasting he is as an assassin. He's pretty damn coldblooded at the start of T&B. |

@Tennoryu Hmm.. Seeing as Hajime no Ippo does not fit the bill of what I am looking for now, and Hajime no Ippo probably copies or is inspired from Ashita no Joe, then I don't think that Ashita no Joe would fit the bill either. About those other two anime you recommended, I can't even find them on MAL. @notsureifsrs I guess I'm gonna have to keep putting it off for now then... *pouts* |

Probably Ashita no Joe has influenced more or less a great number of shounen anime that were made after it. But I'm not looking to get into the roots of it. I'm looking to watch an anime where a character fits the description that I have given in the original post. Can you say that Rocky Joe is a similar character to Duke Togo and Kenshiro, for example? Not in just the fact that all of them were fighters of some sort, but in attitude, personality and all that. If he is so, then I will consider watching Ashita no Joe too. Although I will definitely watch it someday, regardless of all that. |

Yeah, I know Toki and Raoh, since I already mentioned Kenshiro in the original post. I've watched some of Hokuto no Ken already and intend to watch more. So Joe beats up a yakuza gang? Does this mean that Ashita no Joe shows fights outside of the ring too? This is interesting... |

His companion is the one that has to hold him back not to always strike a killing blow. I think that makes him similar although he doesn't have the "let's kick some ass" mentality you look for nor does the anime contain alot of action, but I mentioned that. |

I think you are being awfully picky, but you want what you want. Perhaps Baki the Grappler. Baki is pretty bad assed but his father, who doesn't show up until later, is BAD ASSED. Although heavy featured, he is not the main. But what do I know. I loved Golgo 13 and simply couldn't watch TTGL. Interesting side note, the Duke of Golgo 13 first appeared in manga form in 1969 and we still don't know how/why he came to be who/what he is. The Golgo Manga is still production. And a "for what it's worth" from my perspective, GAR is GAR and has nothing to do with being a "real man." Personally, I wouldn't have one in the house. From Urban Dictionary: When a male character is so manly that otherwise straight male viewers find themselves attracted to him, they are said to be "GAR" for the character. Nowadays "GAR" is used to describe characters that have reached the utmost levels of manliness. Said levels being judged looking at: - The character's build (the more muscles he has the manlier he is). - The ability to shout his attacks (GETTA BIIIIIIMU!, ROCKETTO PAAANCHI!, ATATATATATATA!!), though this is not necessarily a must. - And finally the power to bring manly tears for the viewer (through either a speech brimming with awsomeness, a manly death, the end of the series, all of these combined etc.). Dude, you're so gar for him... Edit: You may also find some GAR in http://myanimelist.net/anime/2216/Shigurui |

Sigh... For you to be telling me this means that I've exhausted this kind of search already and there's no one to compare with the Duke and the others I've mentioned... Though I still think there might be a few characters somewhere lost in the 80s and 90s when I think that anime started getting really violent... But I guess no one that would really fit the portrait of the character I described. Anyway, I'm watching Shigurui already. Up to the sixth episode by now. Doesn't even come close to having any character like that though but the show is quite enjoyable and memorable anyhow. Well, I don't watch anime with only one criteria in mind. |
