This is going to be difficult as a large number of AMV producers that post at AnimeMusicVideos.Org, where I "shop" for AMV's do not allow their vids to be posted on YouTube and get about 9 kinds of cranky when you do, so if you don't have an account there (why not?), you may have to start one (it's free) to view some of these.

Love the music for this one and the video is pretty good too!

Gods and Mortals

A Different Kind of Heroism

I'm not a real big fan of the music for these next two AMV's, but they work so with the videos that they are a couple of my favorites. The second one of the two was put together with some of the best timing I've ever seen for an amateur video producer.

Shrine of the Goddess!

This one is just enjoyable.

I have a lot I love , usually when they are well done I will collect them. AMV.org really does have the better videos, that being said I have a ton I love on YouTube and for simplicity of watching I'll use those. ^.~ I wont even use my own...

Anime videos

And the vocaloid videos

And now my FAVORITE Vocaloid video

While not technically anime, currently I am a big fan of Hatsune Miku.
At least I can go see her in concert.

Ya can't be any worse off than my wife Chelle, I have lost count of how many 100s of times I have played Hatsune Miku's Giving Day Concert.

I do know that I can actuallly 'see' the concert without actually watching it now merely from listening to it as I have had it on so often now hehe.

Sorry... I just can't listen to Caramelldansen in English. :P Has to be in Swedish for me (off on a tangent: I do like The Stranglers "Sveridge" which is their song "Sweden (All Quiet On the Eastern Front)" sung in Swedish).

As for me... Some of my favourite Vocaloid tracks don't actually have the Vocaloid characters in them:

Tripster:

The 9th

This is the version "PopPiPo" which I carry around on my iPod Touch:

Last but not least... "Bucchigiri ni Shite Ageru♪". One of the guys in the office thought this was quite funny even though he didn't understand a single word of the song.

And For Sukunai, XD of course our choices aren't going to match up. Where I do like Miku-chan... my love for Gakupo and Kaito are much more so I tend to look for other things. I'll see what else I have favorited ...

LOLOL... that made me NEVER want to watch Ranma 1/2.

I'm considering starting a "Favorite Caramelldansen" thread since that seems to be so big now. LOL. My daughter got me hooked on that. Between Caramelldansen and Leva's Polka some great videos have been made.

They're both just so damned catchy. For those of you not familiar with either, here's a sample of each:

OK.. excuse my ignorance on this one, but how do these vocaloids work? and where do you find them? I know Google is supposed to be my friend but I will probably get a better answer here than by wading through 1937436464849 links containing Vocaloid and V****a or finding best prices for Vocaloids. I did try find that Miku Hatsune but the same thing applied.
Now that I think about Vocaloids, do I take them before meals? every 8 hours?
May the Uguu be with you.

^ Vocaloids should be taken every 15 minutes of your waking life. j/k! This Wiki page should serve as a good introduction of the madness: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hatsune_Miku

Here's another Miku video I've enjoyed over the years:

Yukkuri Shite Ittene!

And this classic: Saihate. In spite of the catchy beat it's quite a sad and reflective song.

Might as well toss in another version of the Turkish March:

...How could I ever forget "Ex-Girl"....

That Yukkuri one is the second Miku video I watched, right after Koi wa Sensou, almost two years ago. They both ended up on my iPod shortly thereafter.

Fine - here's some recent favorites

As you can see, Vocaloids come in more flavors than plain Vanilla.

This has to be one of the best Miku songs I have heard in a long time. Append Dark is by far my favorite voicebank, and you can really hear the nuances from Saki Fujita's voice. Plus Tsumugi Uta (Spinning Song) is beautiful in a traditional style, and hearing Miku actually sound japanese is refreshing.

Of course, I do like the haunting stuff that touches on traditional music. Probably my favorite producer (aside from Hachi, who is my current favorite) is Noazi. Though he has only produced a handful of songs, and nothing at all in 2010. A shame, as he is most definitely under appreciated. My absolute favorite Vocaloid song is this:

I don't know if this counts as my second favorite Vocaloid song, but its certainly my second favorite Noazi song.

Gonna have to wait a bit to see what Alysaav posted. In the meantime, I found this:

DECO*27 started out as a Vocaloid producer, but lately has been doing work with human singers. In this case, the vocalist is Marina, who you might recognize as she provided the vocals for Iwasawa of Girls Dead Monster in the Key Anime Angel Beats.

For that video I'd hazard to say they just took the original song and added the MMD (MikuMikuDance) graphics. An example of that which I've come across is this song:

Original vocalist with MMD:

Vocaloid (Meiko) singing the same song with roughly the same MMD routine:

As for your husband's question: The various Vocaloid packages use specialized voice samples to synthesize singing. So it's not strictly a case of synthesizing a song based on a recording of a person singing a given song. More info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vocaloid

Here are some more that I like....

For some obscure reason I went looking for info on Dr. Demento tonight and was reminded of the song used in the AMV located at animemusicvideos.org here.
The video portion is available on YouTube, but for some stupid copyright reason the audio has been blocked and is not available.
One of these day I really should d/l Ouran Host Club just to see if the series is as funny as some of the AMV's that have come out of it.
