**SPOILERS FOR EP 20**

I should preface this by saying that this anime is my first contact with the "Anne of Green Gables" story — I haven't read the book or watched any other adaptations — but have loved it so far as a standalone experience. Despite this, I wanna say that: I feel like the romance between Anne and Gilbert could have been executed much better. I know that it'll be fleshed out better in the coming episodes, but Gilbert's confession just felt premature considering how little screen-time this relationship has got. When Anne was struggling to imagine a world without Gilbert, I found it funny because, going off what we've been shown, for me it would be no struggle at all to imagine Anne living a happy life without him; I mean, that's what we've been shown so far in most of the episodes. I just wish they did something more with the relationship. They have the chemistry and work great as a couple, but I feel the way they've gone about making it happen is kinda lackluster. Anyway, I'm still loving the show and just had to point out this minor fault. Am I just missing something or do y'all agree?

The idea of that first confession is that it feels premature and out of the blue for Anne. You experience the story through Anne's eyes. But the adaptation has omitted some stories that show Gilbert and Anne closeness after they agreed to be friends. In my opinion the story is a bit rushed, since they tried to compress 3 books in 1 season.

I get you, just go watch Akage no Anne. If you want expanded content, a more solid base for their relationship, and to understand what Anne Shirley is generally missing, go watch Akage no Anne. I was introduced to Green Gables by Anne Shirley as well, and after being intrigued by Anne's quirkiness I couldn't wait and started the 79' show for more content. I was immediately hooked, and only became more intrigued after learning Hayao Miyazaki worked on it. Binged it all in one week. Anne and Gilbert's relationship during that series is mostly in the "frenemy" phase as it ends before "Anne of Avonlea", but I'm confident the extra detail (like Marilla's story about dating Gilbert's dad) and better pacing will make you appreciate where things end up.

Anne Shirley is by comparison (since they're trying to tackle two books in like 14 episodes) obviously skimming over large sections of the plot, and this is likely why things are rather tenuous. I hate to break it to you, but their relationship isn't going to get much more "fleshed out" during these last few episodes. (Without spoilers) all the growth is essentially going to come from Anne herself, having to make certain decisions on her own, and then one critical moment finally gets her to understand how things are. Gilbert is unfortunately pretty much going to be on the sidelines until the end. Those who have read the manga know exactly where the show is going to end.

more than that, it'd that the story is rushed.

I wouldn't say rushed, I think the storytelling in the "adult" Anne part is disjointed more than anything. Many times while I'm watching i'm like "wait, is this a recap? oh no, this is what is happening now".

I haven't looked at the credits or anything, but the show feels like different teams are in charge of full production of different portions of an episode, and they patched it together. Something like how live action soap operas are made.
