It's interesting how it kind of inverted a lot of the typical narrative progression of typical super robot shows. Generally speaking it is the villains who get closer and closer to their goal, while the heroes need to endure against ever-stronger attacks. Moreover it is the heroes who the plot generally focuses on and who get the most character development. In Dairugger XV, the titular super robot rarely felt seriously threatened (it didn't even get the mid-season upgrade that's been a trope since Mazinger Z, the grandaddy of the Super Robot genre), and it was the earthlings who kept getting closer and closer to their goal, while the situation on Galveston became ever more desperate. And no character got anywhere near as much character development or carried the plot quite as much as Teles. Overall a surprisingly good super robot anime, that's a change of pace from your typical 70s/early 80s super robot stuff. You can clearly see the DNA of Space Battleship Yamato all over this one. It may be well known as one part of the Voltron franchise, but in its original form, I think it's actually a bit of a hidden gem. |
