I read that the S;G0 anime is a sequel to the S;G0 VN... so what happens in the VN? Is it just a cliffhanger that you have to watch the anime to complete?

The "best" way to watch this show is by completing the game and then watching it, as there is some stuff which isn't properly explained in the show compared to the visual novel.

However the visual novel is somewhat of a clusterfuck, because its story relies heavily on the terrible multiple endings system and constant unnecessary shifting between different character perspectives, and this has the negative effect of making everything feel incredibly disjointed and just overall shit.

I highly suggest you to skip the visual novel and just go straight into the show, as it takes many of the incredibly great yet underutilized plot points that worked in the visual novel and massively expands them (episode 8 being a great example of this), and also tidies the story up to make everything more coherent.

It's hard to explain without spoiling, but basically, Steins;Gate is a series of iterations of events. The 0 Visual Novel shows us a few of them, but kinda does a "time-skip" for the final one, only showing us somewhat of an "epilogue" of it to complete the story.

The Anime is that final iteration that was mostly "skipped", so it's indeed kinda of a Sequel to it, even if it would be more of a Midquel, as the "epilogue" was the true ending.

Nop, it's just that the way to the end is not directly shown to the reader, as they already have seen most of it with different details throughout the game.

Having played the virtual novel after watching the anime, I like the anime much better and would recommend it over the VN. The anime combines all the branching storylines of the VN into one solid story, which is much easier to follow and better overall IMO.
