| Even before we get to know the real reason, in the anime it is pointed out thoroughly that spirits are an object of religious worship, and that firearms, electricity and technology in general are seen as sacrilegious. I'm sorry but I think you were not paying attention. |

I've always thought the same thing. With only the anime as a reference the spirits seem incongruous.

| @rmcewen Spirits are a hint for a bigger truth about the world and the story that gets revealed later on. Anime only went to vol 3 out of 14 so obviously most of the important information hasn't been disclosed to the reader at that point. |
