As a Chinese person who grew up with the show, I can confirm that this show was popular in China, maybe not as popular as something like Doraemon or Shin Chan, but it was still popular. The show even had a mandarin dub.

The most memorable scene that Chinese people reference was definitely when Mao made the golden fried rice.
