What do you think of this project?

I want to be charitable and say this is a project headed by untested industry staffers, but it seems like they picked up the cheapest talent they could find on ArtStation.

An emphatic zero for expectations.

Maybe they want a new MS Igloo to demo Unreal5, before implementing it on a real Gundam project.

I think, seeing as this is an original work and being handled by a western writer and director whom I've never heard of, I will remain hugely skeptical.

But also as a OYW fanboy, I will remain hopeful. I'm indifferent on the use of UE5. Doesn't look bad. The Gundam in the promo poster also has me intrigued though. The weapon on the right shoulder looks like a Gatling mount not unlike the style of the MS-06K/JK when equipped with the 120mm Gatling cannon. I'm not familiar with any Gundams that use a shoulder mounted Gatling gun so it could be a new original model. I almost hoped for a minute that it was Mudrock but that would be dual 300mm ballistic shoulder cannons and also in the North American theater, whereas this story seems to be set in Europe.

That would also have meant the Midnight Fenrir story finally being animated and nobody cares about what I want. I know one thing though. If that ever does happen, I don't want it being handled by a bunch of randos who've never touched Gundam before.

The synopsis on the official website is very general at the moment, but it says that it will be a 6-episode show about the European front during the One Year War.

The idea of a nameless studio making a western produced Gundam with a female protagonist feels like red flags.

But at the same time the director, Erasmus Brosdau, isn't a complete unknown. If you're into Warhammer 40K, then you may have already seen some of his work in the fan film 'The Lord Inquisitor' which looked both stunning and completely on-point for the setting. If he's a fan of 40K, it's not a huge leap in logic to guess that he might like Gundam too; especially the stuff like 08th MS Team, which has been cited as an influence.

I don't know, this might actually be alright.

This seems like it's going to be tone deaf. I guess this is spiritually the closest to Gundam Evolve and Igloo. Which by themselves are kind of tone deaf as well. Ooh realism equates to mature story lines!

Though I guess I'm personally a vocal outlier when I say that I don't like the Gundam entries that try to be realistic, dark and have an adult soldier protagonist. The fact that the protagonists are on the side of Zeon kind of makes it seem like this won't be good no matter what, that alongside the guy behind this doesn't exactly seem to appreciate Warhammer 40k for it's more satirical aspects don't really make a good impression.

Well, after G-Witch, the idea of Gundam copying Warhammer 40k seems more reasonable than Utena. Although if we're talking about copying, I don't really like the idea that Gundam, in search of a new identity, is just trying to copy various other franchises.

Just going by the trailer it's hard to get excited, this looks like it's just going to be "big robot war cool" slop rather than something trying to tell a story.

I wasn't suggesting that it's going to copy 40K. All I said was that he made a well put together 40K fan film that captures the feel of 40K and perhaps he could do the same with Gundam.

I didn't say it was your thought. I said that might be a good idea in general.

My main issue is that it's One Year War again, which is already overused as a setting. There were already too many spin-offs related to OYW, so it's impossible to piece them together into one coherent story setting. Otherwise Zeon would need to have millions of troops and so many resources to develop so many different suits.  For a bunch of colonies, this is a lot! It was already a stretch for them to have some remnants in Unicorn. But then again, Bandai/Sunrise were never really concerned with any "canon", so it's whatever. I think there are other periods of UC that they could explore more, just set something after existing TV series/OVAs. Anyway, best to enjoy it for what it is, hopefully it's going to be a good, self-contained story.

Bingo, this is Igloo project 2.0, a way to test and slowely develop techniques around UE5 before implementing on some mainline project.
