In my opinion, it doesn't look weird. It looks nice, and the "sparkle eyes" is probably for helping to highlight the main characters of this anime (for attention).

Eyes will be explained later, round 2-3 season if I'm not wrong, to be blunt, is nothing that special, they are just an expression of the capacity to lie to the public.
Black ones are not explained openly but are related to feelings of hate and depression (also omicidial intent)

the sparkling eyes have an explanation, you'll see later on in the season other characters will acquire the sparkle too. It is like a symbolism kind of thing.

It’s a feature, called character design. In episode 2 for example, the star in Aqua’s Eye turned black to emphasise his dark intentions. It’s not something that’s visible for the characters in the show. At least not as a visible star, more such as a feeling.

If you pay attention, you'll notice Ai has 2 of those eyes, while her kids have only one. Aqua's right eye, and Ruby's left eye, so I think they have a meaning, otherwise they would've probably made both of their eyes like that.

It's called symbolism.

Ai had two star-eyes and her kids each have one, symbolizing her 'star power' being split up and inherited by both of them.

It kind of shows the mentality and goal of the characters later on. At the end of episode 1 aquas eyes turn black to shoe a killing intent and a sense of determination and bloodlust and they can determine a lot of things metaphorically

(includes spoiler from ep 2 )(idk how to mark spoilerS)in my opinion , it is the way to so this person has some capablities like Ai had the bright eyes or brightest star , and many times the narrator usses the phrase "the brighter stars die faster " and when aqua turn to revenge and stuff his "star" turns black so this could depict the personality too and since both kids have only 1 star so maybe it means they are no where close to being as capable as Ai .

Yeah, like I said it's just a design choice. They're using the stars in their eyes to symbolise the fact that they are stars, and Ai had two brighter stars because she was the biggest star. There's not some hidden secret power or anything beyond that, it's only to show that the kids are related to Ai

Are those ugly eyes now just random stuff? Why don't give them some Rinnegan or Sharingan right away, no one would question this weird choice.
