So the end of episode 12 is kind of confusing to me.

It was a pretty big point that if you get erased while in the simulation, you're gone, especially for the AIs, but then they all show up in the final two minutes even though all of them except Aoi got erased.

Apart from that making no sense, if they were somehow able to recover the data for the AIs, shouldn't they have also been able to recover Ai's consciousness as well? I wasn't really paying attention for most of the important parts so I probably missed something, but it doesn't seem like it would be that difficult if you can (seemingly) flawlessly restore 4 programs that were supposed to be permanently deleted.

For the girls, there's every possibility that because companies from other nations were involved in their production, they would have had access to them and had their files backed up on their servers so it would have been quite easy for the Japanese company to bring them in and implement them into the new program.

As for Ai, yes it probably would have been possible to bring her back but that wasn't the point. The whole concept of the show was the idea of overcoming grief and tragedy. Ai will live on in Asahi's memories and that is how Asahi moves on in life. Ai could get her own robot body but Asahi will always know she's not real, she was an important person in his past that is dead and nothing will change that. Yes, the other girls aren't real either, in the conventional sense, but they did their part to help Asahi cope and move on, and they all share a part of Ai's soul in a way, that's how they were created in the first place. They have their own emotions and agency now. Asahi helped them realise that.

That was the whole point of the ending. Ai is gone, Asahi will always remember her but he has to move on with his life.

I think it was SAO reference of how Kirito managed to save his tamagotchi by emulating sentient AI and downloading it into pendrive.
A plot hole and ransom bullshit so baffling, that author had to go to Twitter explaining it and making up stuff on spot.
Most likely those were not the only copies of them.
So, you should just not worry or think about it.
AI girls getting artificial bodies and entering real world is also SAO reference.

i'm maybe wrong about this but isn't Ai's personality an unintended personality. Ai was a side effect of using the original Ai's brain as a baseng the New AI. (damn this naming is kinda hard to read.)

As I already said, there is no need for human intelligence to be put into, since everything has been generated by an AI. The greatest plot twist since The Day I Became A Goddess.
Help! I need somebody. Help! Not just anybody. Help! You know I need someone. Helpppppp!

no it's not, the "data" was saved by ai through aoi. I don't get why some people hate this anime. I know it's not "real" isekai when heroine of mc died like shigatsu wa Kimi no uso. But let's figure out why this anime kinda "confusing" because it's anime based on future technology, so ofc it's kinda weird when you see a girl died but his memory still remain through AI. But I got the point about the creator make this story,it's kinda sad tho. So,seeing this anime get score around 6,9+ it's bit cruel,it's deserve to get 7 or 8. I hope there's sequel but it sounds impossible but nothing is impossible in my opinion. Haha

The 4 butterflies that go into Aoi's hand before Asahi leaves the virtual world were coloured as the 4 girls, I'm assuming they're remanent data of the 4 girls that were erased or something.

It doesn't really make sense since even objects that weren't on them when they were erased also got erased but I guess the creator wanted to deus ex machina a happy ending which in my opinion ruins the whole point of the anime and it's supposed message.

As for Ai, she technically wasn't an AI her brain was used as the basis for it and due to Aoi's strong feelings for Asahi and the fact Aoi's AI is the least modified Ai was able to take over Aoi temporarily, I mean it's probably possible to bring her back but I would have hated the show even more for further going against it's own message.

For reference
Ai - The ex-Real Childhood Friend
Aoi - AI girl who was taken over
AI - Artificial Intelligence

Yeah, Alice did also show up in a box after all.

But there's just no comparison between this show and SAO or Alice.
