To start it off, I love Hataraku Maou Sama Season 1 Wholeheartedly. Even there might be certain animation inconsistency which are limited in Season 1. Generally, it was good. The artstyle, the facial expressions such as funny face or serious were consistent and really showed the emotions.

For Season 2, I am not expecting animation as good as Season 1, just average animation would be fine. But up till episode 4.. it just feels unbearable to watch their facial expression as it feel as though it was forced and unnatural, majorly a turn off. Some of the facial expressions was so painful to watch such as disfigured face, like their eyes are not even align and all over the place like some low grade anime. It is very disturbing and just feel so weird that you cannot dive into the story . I mean come on.. even a low budget anime can do better than the current animation that season 2 have.

i have the same thoughts.. i mostly weirded by ashiya's expression.. i mean he was kinda, little expression cool type.. but now unnecessary weird facial expressions... before started watching season 2 i re-watched season 1.. so I totally turn off by the animation..

also i think voice also little degraded... may be because they aged... anyway the "ente-isla" language was totally degraded i mean.. because i just finished season 2 and started season 1 i totally realise more problems

I too feel concerned by the unnecessary facial expressions. Especially this one. It was very disturbing tbh....

It feels like they didnt do a good job with the shaders on the face. It looks way too awkward and unrecognizable.

yeah I'm really not liking season two at all. the art is popping with wayyy to much color and weird exaggerations like above posters shown.

child plotlines are the hands down worst. they are always like pets until they need to be gods of with adult intelligence and then they flick the switch back to pets. its the same for every anime with baby's of any kind.

It's a different studio that's why the animation is so bad. Ashiya got the worse of it, I loved him in season 1 but here I just want him off screen!

Another thing I noticed is the doll effect. Whenever two people are talking everyone else stops moving and look at the camera directly as if someone pressed their pause switch. It's VERY noticable when Maou and Emi are talking/bickering and Alas is there. The kid freezes and the eggshell highlighter on her skin makes her seem more like a doll than a person. In most cases the discussion IS about her yet she just sits there looking blankly ahead. Very unnatural... I'm not an Anya fan (from Spy x Family) but they got that part right, kids are curious and will react to mom and dad talking, even more if they think it's about them. The only time they ever sit perfectly still is in front of a TV... even then they're probably swinging their legs or snacking.

I like the new art style but the inconsistency of the facial animations is a little jarring. I still really enjoy it though, it’s not enough to hurt how I feel about the show. Just a bit odd.

The producers will love you when they pocket all of the money for themselves instead of using it for the animation team.

At least for me, I'm not at all bothered the artstyle of Season 2 deviates greatly from Season 1. I fully understand the prospects that a different studio and different staff picking up the series don't necessarily have the means to replicate most things.

The issue here is that, in spite of differences between seasons, the animation in Season 2 is objectively low quality. Face proportions are messed up not due to artistic liberty, but because there was just no consistency or quality control. Exaggerated expressions aren't a problem in itself, but bad execution in multiple angles (i.e. in terms of personality: uncharacteristic of that character; in terms of artstyle: poor line stroke and shading work) will only make the art distracting, not additive to the scenario.

It would really suck for the second season to suffer this badly if this was the result of low funding for the MAOUSAMA team (it's probably exactly what's going on here, the industry is predatory), but please understand that barring all circumstance, the artstyle quality fluctuates from fine to bad.

I know its closed-minded of me, but the inconsistencies of art and animation, regardless of how interesting the story might've been, led me to focus on that rather than the plot. People here are saying they are able to see past the art style, but for me half the medium is related to stuff being visually stimulating, so coupled with subpar animation, this run-of-the-mill art style (IMO) certainly did it no favors.

You're right, the animation quality dropped enough to distract from the plot. There are too many inconsistencies, enough to make me, a dude who never goes into forums and talk about it, came here and discuss it. Still, we were never meant to have a second season. I, at least, think we shouldn't look down to what is, arguably, a gift, but then again, the first season really deserved a much better second season than the one we have.
