| How exactly does the universe work in this anime? After the first season, I thought it was mostly about being attacked by enemies from yet another alternate world, but it ended up being some kind of endless jumping from one world to another. The fact that these worlds are very similar to each other and are led by factions devoid of originality only confuses the matter even more. |

| Okay basically the series acknowledges that there are several worlds (in different dimensions) other than their own and that there is a naturally occurring event every now and then called the Waves of Calamity. What happens during the waves of calamity is more like a battle for dominance in between two worlds who undergo a wave of calamity- these interdimensional cracks appear which will allow dimensional monsters to enter the world who should be taken care of or will lead to total annihilation of the species and allow for the world's to bleed and fuse with only one of them left. In S1 it was about these waves in Raphtalia's world until three new villains appear whom we later find out are kinda the cardinal hero equivalents from the other world facing the same calamity. So in S2, after the spirit tortoise arc, Naofumi and gang gets transported to Glass' world where he learns of the truth (which the other world knew and he didn't) about these calamities. After they solve the common enemy- they come to a truce since they're both basically facing the same problem and decide to atleast stop attacking each other and instead just focus on their own enemies (the monsters from the waves). So far, nobody knows why these waves are happening or if there's anyway to stop the eventual collision which could end their world but that's actually in the later light novels if you wanna find out. |
