As the title says I know nothing about the game or any other stuff related to it. Is it a standalone movie? Should I give it a go?

I watched it without any other Final Fantasy knowledge and from what I know there's no connections to the rest of the franchise.

To me it just ended up feeling like a bland sci-fi movie but you can make your own opinion

The only connection it has with the franchise is that it's by the same creator.

It's stand alone like most ff games are self contained. As a anime it has slight outdated feel and maybe little slow but still enough interest to be worth watching.

You should watch it, but keep in mind it's a stand alone movie. No references to chocobos, materia, bahamut, phoenix down or anything of the sort
This film had a fierce backlash at the time and square had struggled since then to recover
