I didn't read the LN but the anime is pretty bad and gets worse over the seasons imo. The last season really was a pain to watch. I had to force myself just because I don't like dropping anime especially when I'm almost done with it.

Season 1 and 2 were good but season 3 was just a mess. This why alot of people say railgun is better which it is lol

I've read the LNs and seen the first two seasons of the anime. The anime isn't that bad, but it's certainly rushed a bit during some of the arcs.

We don't talk about the 3rd season

Season 1 is average to decent.
Season 2 is decent to good.
Season 3 is mostly bad except for very small portions of Accelerator storyline and the third arc.

Index as an anime it ranges from being fine to good (6-7) however as an adaptation from the source material its bad (3/10).

I've only read 3 volumes of the LN's so far but I can tell you the anime fails to showcase how dark & gritty the LN's are they pretty much cut, redo or tone down most of the explicit scenes that are gory or too violent while exaggerating the fan service scenes making you think the story isn't as serious but hey JC staff gotta make sure we get our shower scenes right.

The MC Touma pretty much has all of his characterization and development cut due to adapting way too many volumes per season. In the LN/Manga Touma is much more cunning & has more personality, the anime however made him into a generic Shonen MC that relies on dumb luck.

I could go on but what I will mainly say is the anime skips ALOT of the world building and lore of the story thanks to the pacing issue. The biggest victim is the magic side of things as there's barely any explanation so its left up to your imagination how things work. This causes some people to not fully understand what's going in regards to the plot which is understandable.

The first 2 seasons are coherent enough to understand what's going on story but the 3rd season will just leave you confused. Someone in the production committee thought it was a smart idea to adapt 9 volumes in 26 episodes, as it turned out it was a complete disaster.

The anime is probably the 3rd best of all time but you just need to read the books to fully appreciate the greatness that is the Index anime.
