Wow, episodes 1-10 of Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin really made me believe I struck gold with this seemingly underwatched show. The atrocities being commited were vile and disturbing, but the show had enough melodramatic shenanigans and brotherhood for the prison arc to not be a completely depressive.

But why in the everliving crap did they have to ruin the show by killing of Bro in the dumbest way possible? I understand Sakuragi not outright gunning down Ishihara in the street, and I sort of understand him giving the letter back, but falling for the sob story and getting stabbed, and then he STILL WALKS AWAY? And where did the complete death wish come from when he basically begged for the American army guys to shoot him dead instead of just dropping the knife?

That, paired with how the show effectively makes a genre 180 and turns into a SOL afterwards saddens me. I think it would have gone down as one of my favorite shows ever if Sakuragi's death wasn't butchered and it ended at 14 episodes.

I think the narrator stated that Sakuragi couldn't think clearly due to the bloodloss. He probably didn't even realize he was still holding the weapon. Him falling for the sob story is absolutely in character as well.

Killing off Sakuragi was perfect in terms of writing. It had a strong effect on every other character in the show and he was a someone with a pretty much completed arc. I think it was a very good decision from the author.

Also yes, it does essentially turn into a slice of life, but how does that make the show worse? The best part about Rainbow is the character development and their interactions and the SOL genre is perfect to achieve that.

The problem I have with the bloodloss excuse is in the moment Bro was stabbed, realizing "hey this guy is still trying to murder me", that should have been the final straw imo. Anything after that and I was already taken out of the scene. I wasn't opposed to killing him off, because as you said his arc was over unlike the rest of the crew. It just didn't sit right with me whatsoever. I understand Sakuragi was a compassionate and understanding individual, but the guy wasn't Jesus, and I think forgiving Ishihara as easily as he did was a bit unbelievable considering he was the devil-incarnate. I also think just because he was compassionate doesn't mean it's ok for him to be played a fool so easily. At least not a sob story from, once again, an absolute monster that committed countless atrocities infront of him for years.

Now that you say it like that, I think you might actually be right about this. It fit his arc, but in retrospect it might not have made much sense. Interesting, it never occurred to me that even Bro's hatred was too deep to forgive someone like Ishihara, but why wouldn't it be? Like you said, he's basically the devils incarnate.

I wholeheartedly agree. I made it through episode 15 before just deciding to drop the show. I really enjoy thriller, horror, survival, and disaster genres, and a list here on MAL titled "18 of the Best Thriller Anime of All Time" recommended Rainbow. On top of that, the rating for this show is high, so I thought I was in for greatness. I'm so mad that I wasted my time here :/

It was necessary to let plot move forward, bro's death was indeed painful but payoff is very great here, I mean, bro's death bring a lot change (or I say improvement) in those six characters and made their friendship more powerful.

So I want to believe that Author did this for greater good.

The author I think is trying to signal an end to one part of the story which is when they are in jail by killing him off. Then the rest of the story is the brotherhood and how they live without him, and what they do in this dark time in Japan's history.
