The first time we hear Arata's parents speaking at the cemetery I thought they were speaking Korean. Obviously I don't understand Japanese or Korean, but I'm so used to the Tokyo dialect and intonation, that the Fukui accent doesn't even sound Japanese. It seems to stress different syllables and it has a very melodic intonation very similar to what I hear with Korean.

Does anyone else have this feeling?

I speak Korean and I was actually thinking the same thing. I don't remember Arata's parents, but Arata's dialect sounds quite similar to the Korean Gyeongsang dialect.

Oh that's interesting! Good to know I wasn't thinking something totally crazy. I wonder if there is a good reason for that similarity or if it is purely coincidence. Do you know if the parts of Japan closest to Korea also have a similar sound, like in Fukuoka?
